915 customs smuggling cases thwarted in Saudi Arabia in one week

Unprecedented security achievement at Saudi ports

In a new security achievement reflecting the vigilance of the monitoring agencies, Saudi Arabia's land, sea, and air customs ports recorded the thwarting of 915 smuggling attempts involving prohibited items in just one week. This accomplishment comes as part of the ongoing and diligent efforts of the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA), which primarily aims to enhance security and protect Saudi society from the dangers of contraband in all its forms.

Details of the seizures: A variety of smuggling methods were used

Official statistics released by the authority revealed that the seized items included 62 types of highly dangerous narcotics , ranging from hashish, cocaine, and heroin to methamphetamine (crystal meth) and Captagon pills, which are designed to destroy the minds of young people. In addition to the narcotics, 395 cases involving other prohibited substances were also recorded.

In a related context, in combating tax and customs evasion, customs ports witnessed the thwarting of 1,942 cases of smuggling of tobacco and its derivatives, in addition to the seizure of 12 types of money smuggled in illegal ways, and two types of weapons and their supplies, which confirms the comprehensiveness of customs control and its accuracy in monitoring all violations.

Historical context and strategic importance

Historically, Saudi Arabia has faced ongoing challenges due to its strategic geographic location connecting three continents, making it a transit point and a target for international smuggling gangs. As smugglers' methods have evolved, Saudi Customs has radically developed its security technologies, relying on state-of-the-art X-ray scanning equipment, trained sniffer dogs, and artificial intelligence systems for risk analysis, thus becoming the first line of defense in protecting the nation's borders.

Local and regional impact of anti-smuggling efforts

The significance of these seizures extends beyond the local level to encompass regional and international dimensions. Locally, these efforts contribute to protecting the national economy from illicit trade and money laundering, and safeguard public health and community security from the scourge of drugs. Regionally and internationally, the Kingdom reaffirms its leading role in combating transnational organized crime, cooperating closely with international organizations to thwart criminal schemes and cut off funding sources for smuggling gangs.

Call for community participation and financial rewards

ZATCA affirmed its commitment to rigorously tightening customs controls on all imports and exports within the Kingdom, in order to safeguard and protect society, through continuous cooperation and coordination with all relevant security agencies. At the same time, the authority extended an open invitation to all citizens and residents to contribute to combating smuggling to protect society and the national economy.

The public can contact the Authority and submit security reports confidentially via the dedicated number (1910), email (1910@zatca.gov.sa), or the international number (009661910). The Authority confirms that it receives reports related to smuggling crimes and violations of the provisions of the Unified Customs Law, and offers generous financial rewards to informants if the information provided is proven true.
