Zelensky and Trump meeting: Details of the new peace plan to end the war
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Friday that he had agreed to a high-level meeting with US President-elect Donald Trump in the near future, as part of intensified diplomatic efforts to end the ongoing war with Russia. Zelensky confirmed via social media that crucial issues could be resolved before the new year, indicating a rapid pace of behind-the-scenes negotiations.
Details of the revised US peace plan
This announcement comes as the Ukrainian president revealed details of a new version of the US peace plan, which has been the subject of intensive negotiations between Washington and Kyiv for weeks. The plan primarily calls for a freeze on the conflict and a cessation of hostilities along the current front lines, without reaching an immediate and final political settlement regarding the territories controlled by Russia, estimated at approximately 19% of Ukraine's landmass.
The revised version of the plan notably omits two conditions previously insisted upon by Moscow: the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the remaining areas under their control in the Donbas region, and a legally binding commitment from Kyiv not to join NATO. While these amendments may appear to favor Kyiv, observers believe that removing these conditions could complicate Moscow's acceptance of the plan at this stage.
The Russian position and diplomatic moves
On the other hand, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that telephone contact had taken place between the Russian and American sides, emphasizing the agreement to continue the dialogue. However, Peskov declined to disclose details of the talks, explaining that releasing information at this sensitive time could harm the negotiation process. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova had previously described progress toward ending the war as “slow but steady,” reflecting Russia’s cautious approach to the new proposals.
International context and importance of the meeting
The anticipated meeting between Zelensky and Trump is of paramount strategic importance, not only for Ukraine and Russia, but for global security as a whole. With Trump's return to the White House imminent, all eyes are on Washington to see how well the new administration can deliver on its promises to end the conflict quickly. These developments come amid a complex situation on the ground and military exhaustion on both sides, making diplomatic solutions an unavoidable option to prevent further escalation that could affect neighboring European countries.
The success of these negotiations could lead to a redrawing of the geopolitical map of Eastern Europe and alleviate global economic tensions stemming from the war, particularly in energy and food markets. However, significant challenges remain, especially given the divergent positions on security guarantees and the future of the disputed territories.
