The University of Buenos Aires awarded Argentine star Lionel Messi an honorary doctorate, Doctor Honoris Causa, which is the highest honorary degree granted by the university.

The university announced that its board unanimously approved the awarding of this honor to Messi, in recognition of his sports career and his role in representing Argentina, with the degree to be conferred next Tuesday, October 6, just hours before his farewell match with the Argentine national team against Benin at the “Monumental” stadium, according to a report broadcast by the “RT” website.

The university clarified in the rationale for its decision that Messi’s career represents a model of “excellence, perseverance, humility, and ethical practice,” along with his commitment to representing his country, values that the institution said it is keen to promote.

University President Ricardo Gilby stated that the honor is not only related to Messi’s achievements and records on the field but also to his status as a “ambassador of popular culture and national identity” in Argentina.

This honor coincides with the anticipated match against Benin, which will mark Messi’s farewell to the Argentine national team after more than two decades since his first appearance in the “Albiceleste” jersey.

According to the Argentine news agency, Messi enters the match holding record numbers with the national team, being the all-time top scorer with 125 goals and holding the record for assists with 68 passes, as well as having played 207 matches in the Argentina jersey.
