Chinese exports jumped by 25% year-on-year in August, driven by strong external demand for high-tech products and those related to artificial intelligence, at a time when foreign trade continues to support the world’s second-largest economy amid weak domestic demand.
Chinese customs data released today (Tuesday) showed that export growth accelerated from 23.9% in July, while imports rose by 28.2% year-on-year, compared to a 27.5% increase in the previous month.
Global Demand Supports Exports
According to “Reuters,” strong demand for AI-related products, along with electric vehicles, solar cells, and lithium-ion batteries, contributed to the performance of Chinese exports in August, despite the weather disruptions that affected some shipping operations.
The value of Chinese exports during the month reached approximately $401.44 billion, while imports amounted to about $282.36 billion, according to Chinese trade data.
Trade Surplus Exceeds $119 Billion
The trade surplus for China in August rose to $119.09 billion, compared to $112.5 billion in July.
The total trade surplus during the first eight months of the year reached $805.51 billion, keeping China on track to record an annual surplus exceeding $1 trillion for the second consecutive year if the current performance continues.
Domestic Economy Faces Pressures
The strong performance of exports comes at a time when China is facing internal challenges, including weak consumption and investment, and ongoing pressures in the real estate market.
The Chinese economy recorded a growth rate of 4.3% in the second quarter of the year, while the government is targeting growth between 4.5% and 5% during 2026.
Analysts believe that strong external demand provides important support for the Chinese economy, but at the same time increases its reliance on foreign markets amid continued weakness in domestic activity.
