Fans of the Saudi and Qatari national teams will set their watches to 6:55 PM (Saturday) when they meet in the semi-finals of the Gulf Cup 27, at the Al-Inma Stadium in Jeddah. This Gulf classic “El Clasico” will evoke a rich history of encounters between the two teams in this very round, with the Green team qualifying for the semi-finals after topping Group A with a perfect score, achieving three consecutive victories in the group stage with 9 points, while the Qatari team secured their spot after drawing positively with the UAE in the final round of Group B.
Impressive Record
The historical record of the Saudi national team in the Gulf Cup semi-finals shows a clear superiority, as the Green team has played seven previous matches in this round, successfully overcoming five of them, while suffering two losses, with no match ending in a draw. The Green team’s first appearance in the semi-finals dates back to the 1974 edition, when they achieved a wide victory over Qatar with a score of (3-1), marking the beginning of a series of Gulf achievements.
Loss and Return
The Green team waited more than three decades to return to the semi-finals, specifically in the 2007 edition in Abu Dhabi, where they lost to the UAE (0-1), a result that represented their first loss in this round. However, the Saudi response came quickly; in the 2009 edition in Muscat, the Green team overcame the Kuwaiti team with a clean goal on January 14, reaching the final and bringing smiles back to their fans.
Saudi Dominance
Subsequent editions witnessed notable Saudi dominance in the semi-finals. In the 2010 edition in Aden, the Green team secured their match against the UAE with a goal to nil on December 2, before the same scenario repeated in the 2014 edition in Riyadh on November 23, when the Saudi team won (3-2) in the highest-scoring match in the history of their semi-final participations with five goals.
Victory and Setback
The Green team continued its superiority in the 2019 edition, when they defeated Qatar (1-0) in the semi-finals, achieving their fourth consecutive victory in this round after winning against Kuwait (2009) and the UAE (2010 and 2014). However, the positive streak came to a halt in the last edition, when the Saudi team lost to Oman (1-2) in Kuwait on December 31, 2024, marking their second loss in the semi-finals.
