وأوضحت وكالة الأرصاد الجوية وعلم المناخ والجيوفيزياء بإندونيسيا، أن الزلزال وقع على بعد 118 كيلومترًا غرب منطقة جيلولو، وعلى عمق 24 كيلومترًا.
وتضرب الزلازل بانتظام أجزاءً مختلفة من إندونيسيا، حيث تقع على حزام المحيط الهادي المعروف باسم حلقة النار، ويلتقي العديد من الصفائح التكتونية وتسبب نشاطا بركانيًا وزلزاليًا متكررًا.
