وسُجل الزلزال في الساعة 22:55 بتوقيت غرينتش قبالة سواحل جزيرة سومبا، على بعد 164 كيلومترًا إلى الجنوب والجنوب الغربي من مدينة لابوان باجو، التي يبلغ عدد سكانها نحو 188 ألف نسمة.
