The International Monetary Fund issued its Article IV Consultation Report for 2026 regarding the Saudi economy, indicating that Saudi Vision 2030 has led to a complete decade of economic transformation.
It noted that the Saudi economy has proven resilient in the face of recent geopolitical tensions in the region.
The Fund projected the Saudi economy to grow by 5.5% in 2027, stating that artificial intelligence could boost GDP growth to 6% over the next decade, as Saudi Arabia leads globally in adopting AI across various sectors.
Sustainable Growth
Economic experts explained that the IMF’s upward revision of its growth forecasts for the Saudi economy reflects confidence in its ability to achieve sustainable growth, emphasizing that the economy is no longer measured solely by oil production but by its capacity to handle crises, absorb shocks, and achieve sustainability.
They pointed out that these forecasts are based on the record of the Saudi economy over the past years, where it successfully navigated consecutive crises including the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, the global rise in interest rates, in addition to current geopolitical tensions, while maintaining robust economic indicators and continued growth.
Strategic Alternatives
Experts reported that the recent Strait of Hormuz crisis demonstrated that the Kingdom possesses strategic alternatives, foremost among them being the oil transport line through the Red Sea, which provided an important route to reduce risks associated with the Arabian Gulf, thereby enhancing international institutions’ confidence in the Saudi economy.
They noted that the Saudi economy has become less dependent on oil compared to previous years, pointing out that the continuation of structural reforms and the development of non-oil sectors have strengthened the economy’s ability to achieve sustainable growth even amid regional challenges.
