The Chief Economist of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Maximo Torero, revealed that the world is on the brink of a new wave of food price inflation.

Torero attributed this potential inflation to the wars in Iran and Ukraine, along with the El Niño phenomenon, stating in press remarks: “These two factors are setting the stage for rising costs and declining crop yields.”

The Strait of Hormuz Problem

Torero predicted that the rise in commodity prices would “begin to increase more now.” He added: “The increase in food prices will start by the end of this year, and it is certain that they will rise further next year, as the process of transferring the impact from raw materials to the final food price takes between 3-6 months.”

He pointed out: “The Strait of Hormuz represents a problem that affects all inputs for goods and agricultural systems, as well as Brent crude because it is used in pumping, packaging, processing, and transportation, and natural gas because it is used in fertilizer factories.”

Rising Energy Costs

It is noted that food prices were one of the main drivers of rising inflation worldwide in 2022, but they have remained relatively stable so far this year, even alleviating some of the increases caused by rising energy costs in certain areas.

However, this calm is likely to be temporary due to factors such as rising crude oil prices, fertilizer shortages from the Gulf region, diesel shortages in some parts of the world, and adverse weather conditions, which will affect costs that will appear in consumer prices even if delayed.
