A message from the President of Zimbabwe to King Salman to strengthen Saudi relations
In a diplomatic move underscoring the deepening ties between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Zimbabwe, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, received a written message from His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa of the Republic of Zimbabwe. The message focused on ways to strengthen and develop bilateral relations between the two friendly countries across various fields.
The message was delivered by the Ambassador of the Republic of Zimbabwe to the Kingdom, Mr. Jonathan Watawnashi, during a meeting with His Excellency the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Engineer Waleed bin Abdulkarim Al-Khuraiji, at the Ministry's headquarters in Riyadh. The meeting included a comprehensive review of bilateral relations, an exploration of future cooperation prospects, and a discussion of key regional and international developments of mutual interest to Riyadh and Harare.
The general context of Saudi-Zimbabwean relations
This message comes within the framework of a strategic direction for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, under the leadership of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, to strengthen its partnerships with African countries. This aligns with the goals of the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which seeks to diversify the economy and build bridges of international cooperation. The Kingdom views Zimbabwe as a promising partner in southern Africa, given its rich natural resources and investment opportunities in vital sectors such as mining, agriculture, and energy.
The importance of the event and its expected impact
Domestically, this high-level diplomatic engagement opens doors for Saudi companies to explore new investment opportunities in Zimbabwe, contributing to the country's economic diversification goals. For Zimbabwe, closer ties with an economic and political power of the Kingdom's stature present an opportunity to attract foreign direct investment and support its development plans, particularly given its government's "open business" policy.
Regionally, this rapprochement strengthens Saudi Arabia’s diplomatic presence in Africa and underscores the Kingdom’s role as a pivotal player striving for stability and development in the region. This cooperation also serves as a model for partnership between Arab and African states, based on mutual respect and shared interests, which could encourage other African nations to enhance their relations with the Kingdom. This diplomatic engagement represents a further step towards building robust economic and political alliances that serve the long-term interests of both countries.
