Al-Najma club officially relegated from the Saudi Professional League
Al-Najma FC's relegation to the Saudi First Division League has been officially confirmed, making them the first team to be relegated from the Saudi Professional League for the 2023-2024 season. This inevitable confirmation came after the team suffered their 22nd defeat of the season against Al-Taawoun FC, losing 2-1 at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Buraidah, in the 29th round of the league.
Al-Najma entered the match clinging to a glimmer of hope for survival, but their ambitions were thwarted by the formidable Al-Taawoun, who were striving to solidify their position in the top four. The "Sugar Boys of Qassim" wasted no time in opening the scoring early, in the eighth minute, with an own goal. Al-Najma's Brazilian defender, Vitor Vargas, attempted to clear a powerful shot from Mohammed Al-Kwikbi, but the ball deflected into his own net. In the second half, Al-Kwikbi made history again, providing a decisive pass to Bulgarian Marin Petkov, who slotted the ball home in the 63rd minute, extending the home side's lead. Although Al-Najma managed to pull one back through their Brazilian defender, Samir Caetano, in the 84th minute, it wasn't enough to avoid the defeat that sealed their fate.
Historical background and a season to forget
Al-Najma's relegation marks the end of a short and arduous journey in the top flight, after the team's promotion from the Yellow League at the end of last season, fueled by high hopes from their fans in the city of Unaizah. However, the team faced immense challenges adapting to the high level and fierce competition of the Roshan League, which this season witnessed a historic surge in the number of international football stars. Throughout the season, the team suffered from inconsistent results and a weak defensive and offensive system, which led to them languishing at the bottom of the table early on and failing to secure enough points to guarantee their survival.
The importance and impact of the result
On the domestic front, this loss means Al-Najma's return to the First Division, requiring the club's management to conduct a comprehensive reassessment of the team's technical and administrative situation and prepare diligently for a comeback. Conversely, the victory boosted Al-Taawon's chances of qualifying for the AFC Champions League, raising their points tally to 49 and securing fifth place, continuing their impressive season as one of the standout teams outside the top tier. As for the overall competition, Al-Najma's relegation underscores the significant gap in competitiveness between the top and bottom clubs, highlighting the difficulty of survival for newly promoted teams given the increased purchasing power and international talent now present in the league. This heightens the excitement and anticipation surrounding the ongoing relegation battle to determine the final two teams to be relegated.
