His Highness Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, the Saudi Minister of Foreign Affairs, received a telephone call today from His Excellency Dr. Fuad Mohammed Hussein, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Iraq. These discussions come within the framework of ongoing coordination and consultation between the two brotherly countries regarding various issues of common interest.
During the call, bilateral relations and ways to strengthen them across various fields were reviewed, in addition to discussing regional and international developments and their repercussions, as well as the efforts being made in this regard. Both sides emphasized the importance of intensifying joint diplomatic efforts to ensure security and stability in the region and to prevent further tensions in light of the current circumstances in the Middle East.
The depth of Saudi-Iraqi relations
These talks are of particular importance given the pivotal role played by both the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Iraq in the Arab and regional arenas. These contacts are a continuation of the upward trajectory in relations between Riyadh and Baghdad, which culminated in recent years with the activation of the Saudi-Iraqi Coordination Council, aimed at elevating relations to strategic levels encompassing security, economic, and investment cooperation.
Coordinating positions regarding current challenges
Given the complex geopolitical challenges facing the region, coordination between the two countries' foreign ministers is a necessary step to unify visions and positions. Through these consultations, the Kingdom and Iraq seek to support peaceful solutions to existing crises, promote dialogue, and bolster international efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions in various hotspots.
Regional and international dimensions
The significance of this contact extends beyond bilateral relations, encompassing broad regional implications. A stable relationship between Riyadh and Baghdad positively impacts the Arab security system as a whole, and strengthens opportunities for economic integration, electricity interconnection projects, and trade exchanges previously agreed upon. Furthermore, the contact underscores the two countries' commitment to continued coordination in international forums to serve the interests of their peoples and the causes of the Arab and Islamic nations.
