Chad: Fuel depot fire in Abéché leaves hundreds injured

A devastating fire engulfed a large fuel depot in Abéché, the capital of the Ouaddaï region in eastern Chad, on Wednesday, injuring more than 200 people, according to Chadian authorities. The incident highlights the challenges of public safety and infrastructure in vital and strategic areas.

In detailing the incident, the regional health delegate, Abdul Mahmoud Shaheen, confirmed that initial reports indicate 206 injured individuals are currently receiving treatment in various city hospitals, while 53 others remain in critical condition and under close medical observation. Emergency and civil defense teams rushed to the scene of the fire to control the flames and prevent their spread to neighboring residential areas, racing against time to avert a more serious disaster.

General context and importance of the city of Abéché

The city of Abéché holds significant strategic importance, not only as a major administrative and commercial center in eastern Chad, but also as a hub for international humanitarian operations. Due to its proximity to Sudan’s troubled Darfur region, the city has become a key gateway for hundreds of thousands of Sudanese refugees fleeing the conflict. UN agencies and NGOs rely heavily on Abéché’s infrastructure, including fuel supplies, to operate their vehicles and generators and deliver vital aid to camps throughout the region.

Expected impact and government response

This incident is expected to have profound repercussions at both the local and regional levels. Locally, it places immense pressure on the city's already limited healthcare system and threatens fuel shortages, which could disrupt transportation and the daily lives of residents. Regionally, any disruption to fuel supplies could severely hamper humanitarian relief efforts, exacerbating the suffering of refugees who are entirely dependent on external aid.

In a swift response to the incident, Deputy Prime Minister Liman Mohamed visited the disaster site to assess the damage and review the rescue efforts. He issued strict directives to local authorities to relocate all fuel depots from residential areas to safe locations outside the city within ten days, a move aimed at preventing a recurrence of such tragedies and ensuring the safety of citizens.
