Documenting 4176 suppliers and launching crop identification

A qualitative leap in agricultural digital transformation

In a strategic move reflecting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s commitment to achieving food security and sustainable development, the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, represented by the Seed and Seedling Center and the Plant Genetic Resources Bank, announced the launch of the “Crop Identification” initiative. This initiative culminates intensive efforts that have resulted in the documentation of 4,176 national plant resources, representing a qualitative leap in the path of agricultural digital transformation and natural resource governance, perfectly aligned with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 aimed at promoting sustainability.

Historical context and the importance of preserving genetic resources

Historically, agriculture in the Arabian Peninsula has faced harsh climatic challenges, including water scarcity and high temperatures, making the preservation of local plant varieties adapted to these conditions a pressing necessity. Globally, the importance of gene banks as a safeguard for protecting biodiversity from extinction due to climate change is paramount. From this perspective, the Saudi initiative is of paramount importance not only domestically but also as a regional and international contribution that strengthens global efforts to preserve and protect plant genetic resources scientifically and sovereignly.

Modern technologies for protecting sovereign rights

Dr. Nasser Al-Marri, Director General of the Center, explained that the initiative relies on a comprehensive and pioneering technological system. Each plant resource is assigned a precise genetic fingerprint and a digital record linked to a QR code. This technological procedure ensures the establishment of intellectual property rights and the Kingdom's sovereign rights over its plant resources. The project also includes the creation of a technical card for each resource, encompassing its morphological and productive data, and its electronic integration via the "Nama" platform to standardize data and prevent the fragmentation of names, thereby enhancing the governance of seed and seedling trade across the Kingdom.

Documented plant resource statistics

In terms of numbers, the national database achieved a huge milestone by documenting 4,176 plant genetic resources, distributed as follows:

  • 3133 resources: from strategic field crops such as wheat, barley, sesame, sorghum, and millet.
  • 434 varieties: of promising and disease-resistant vegetables for cultivation in protected and open environments.
  • 294 suppliers: of horticultural and fruit crops, which contributed to the production of 50,000 certified seedlings to support farmers.
  • 246 resources: From pasture and forest plants to support afforestation projects.
  • 69 resources: from medicinal and aromatic plants to open new horizons for industrial and commercial investment.

Expected impact and support for national initiatives

The anticipated impact of this initiative extends to supporting genetic improvement programs and enabling research centers to develop strains more adaptable to climate change and resistant to diseases. The initiative also serves as a fundamental scientific reference point for supporting major national afforestation projects, most notably the "Green Saudi Arabia" initiative, and efforts to combat desertification. In conclusion, the center affirms its commitment to developing biotechnology tools to ensure the sustainability of the agricultural sector and enhance production efficiency by transitioning from traditional preservation methods to field operations, thereby achieving comprehensive national food security.
