In sad news that has swept through Egyptian sports circles, Captain Mustafa Riad , former star of Tersana Club and the Egyptian national team, passed away yesterday (Tuesday) at the age of 86 after a long battle with illness. "The Gazelle," as he was affectionately known by fans, leaves behind a monumental footballing legacy and a golden career that has cemented his name among the most prominent legends of Egyptian football in the 20th century.
The golden era of the sixties and breaking the monopoly of the two poles
Mustafa Riad is considered one of the pillars of Tersana's golden generation, a generation that succeeded in changing the landscape of Egyptian football during the 1960s. Riad was not just a prolific goalscorer; he was part of a unique football system that broke the monopoly of Egyptian football giants Al-Ahly and Zamalek on titles. His efforts culminated in leading "The Hammers" to the Egyptian Premier League in the 1962-1963 season (according to the generation's historical records) and the 1965-1966 season, in addition to winning the Egypt Cup in 1965 and 1967, creating unforgettable glory for the blue club.
