Developing the Dhu al-Hulayfah Miqat: Integrated services for pilgrims

Comprehensive development to enhance the journey of pilgrims

In a strategic move aimed at enriching the religious experience of pilgrims, the Miqat Dhu al-Hulayfah Mosque in Madinah has undergone a comprehensive development and renovation program. These projects are part of an integrated system designed to enhance the quality of services provided to Hajj and Umrah pilgrims, in line with the ambitious goals of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 and the Guests of God Service Program, which prioritizes the comfort and safety of visitors to the Two Holy Mosques.

Historical and religious significance of the Miqat of the people of Medina

The Miqat of Dhul-Hulayfah, also known as the "Tree Mosque," holds immense historical and spiritual significance in Islam. It is the designated Miqat by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) for the people of Medina and those passing through it, including pilgrims performing Hajj and Umrah, to enter into the state of Ihram and begin their spiritual journey towards Mecca. Located in the Abyar Ali area, approximately 14 kilometers from the Prophet's Mosque, it is the furthest Miqat from Mecca. Given its importance, development projects have been undertaken to enhance this prominent Islamic landmark and accommodate the increasing number of visitors each year.

Development project details: Integrated infrastructure

The development work overseen by the Madinah Region Development Authority in partnership with relevant entities included substantial improvements to infrastructure and service facilities, most notably:

  • Increased capacity: The mosque's capacity has been significantly increased, rising from 5,000 worshippers to more than 15,000 worshippers, ensuring it can accommodate large crowds, especially during peak seasons.
  • Interior facilities upgraded: The mosque's carpets were completely replaced, covering an area of over 2,400 square meters, with a visual identity that harmonizes with the mosque's character. The sound system was also upgraded with the latest digital technology, through the installation of more than 190 indoor and outdoor speakers to ensure clear and crisp sound.
  • Facilitating movement and transportation: To ensure the smooth flow of visitors, more than 24 main and secondary corridors and axes were implemented, in addition to developing the surrounding squares, planting more than 600 trees and shrubs, and installing more than 7,000 spotlights and lighting poles to enhance the urban landscape.
  • Integrated services and security monitoring: The area is equipped with over 40 diverse shops and retail outlets, including cafes, restaurants, and convenience stores, to meet all visitors' needs. To support operational efficiency and security, a modern surveillance system comprising more than 300 digital cameras has been installed.

Expected impact at the local and international levels

The impact of these projects extends beyond the local level, enhancing the urban landscape of Medina, leaving a positive mark internationally. By providing a comfortable, safe, and convenient experience for millions of pilgrims from around the world, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia reinforces its position as a leader of the Islamic world and custodian of the Two Holy Mosques. These efforts also contribute to achieving the goals of the Guests of God Service Program by facilitating the hosting of larger numbers of pilgrims and providing exceptional services that leave a lasting impression.
