Education: 40 marks for grades and penalties for possessing a mobile phone

The Ministry of Education issued important and decisive clarifications regarding the new mechanism for distributing grades in the educational stages, in addition to tightening disciplinary procedures related to the possession of mobile phones inside the school premises, within the framework of the Ministry’s continuous endeavor to regulate the educational process and raise the efficiency of students’ academic achievement.

Grade distribution: 40 marks determine academic fate

In line with ongoing updates to the academic calendar, the Ministry confirmed that 40% of the total grade will be used to determine students' final averages. This distribution reflects the importance of final exams and practical projects, which measure students' comprehension of the course material throughout the semester. This step aims to promote a more serious approach to academic achievement and encourage students to engage with all aspects of the educational process, not just attendance, to ensure strong educational outcomes that meet national aspirations.

Mobile phone ban: “Switched off” does not exempt from punishment

Regarding school discipline, the Ministry has emphasized the absolute prohibition of bringing mobile phones to schools. Notably, the new directives stress that even if a mobile phone is switched off, of it constitutes a clear violation punishable by law. This decision aims to eliminate any pretexts for abuse, such as photographing students or teachers, or being distracted from class, which negatively impacts a safe and conducive learning environment.

The three penalties for violating the mobile phone system

Educational sources explained that the code of conduct and attendance specifies three graduated penalties that will be imposed on any student found to be in possession of a mobile phone inside the school, namely:

  • Obtaining a written pledge: The student and his guardian are required to sign a pledge not to repeat the violation, to ensure compliance in the future.
  • Confiscation of the device: The school administration has the right to confiscate the mobile phone and hand it over to the parent after taking the necessary legal measures.
  • Deduction of conduct grades: In case of repeated misuse of the device, grades will be deducted from conduct and attendance, which may affect the student's academic record.

Context of the decision and its educational significance

These decisions are part of a broader effort to develop the Kingdom's education system. Through updating the code of conduct and attendance policy, the Ministry aims to create a school environment free from digital distractions. Global educational studies indicate that banning phones in schools directly contributes to improved concentration, reduced cyberbullying, and enhanced direct social interaction among students.

This strict enforcement of regulations is part of the Ministry's strategy to improve learning outcomes, as school discipline is considered the cornerstone of academic excellence. The Ministry calls upon parents to cooperate with schools in implementing these instructions to ensure the best interests and academic future of their children.
