Egypt supports Somali unity and warns against instability in the Horn of Africa

The Arab Republic of Egypt reaffirmed its firm and unwavering support for the unity and sovereignty of the Federal Republic of Somalia over all its territory, while simultaneously warning against any unilateral actions that could destabilize the vital Horn of Africa region. This Egyptian position stems from Cairo's strategic vision, which considers the security and stability of neighboring countries an integral part of Egyptian and Arab national security.

The importance of stability in the Horn of Africa for regional security

The Horn of Africa holds immense geopolitical importance, not only for the countries of the region but for the world at large, given its location overlooking the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the southern entrance to the Red Sea. Cairo consistently emphasizes that any instability in this region directly impacts international maritime traffic and the security of the Red Sea, the vital artery that feeds the Suez Canal. Therefore, Egypt's warnings stem from a careful assessment of the risks that could arise from the fragmentation of states or the support of separatist movements that threaten the cohesion of the Somali nation-state.

Historical relations between Egypt and Somalia

Egypt's current stance is not a recent development, but rather an extension of deep-rooted historical ties between the two countries. Egypt was among the first nations to support Somalia's independence and contribute to building its national and educational institutions. Over the past decades, Egyptian diplomacy has maintained an active presence on the Somali issue, both through bilateral support and via regional and international organizations such as the League of Arab States and the African Union, with the aim of empowering the Somali government to extend its authority and combat terrorism.

Adherence to the principles of international law

Cairo bases its position on the principles of international law and the charters of the United Nations and the African Union, all of which stipulate respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states and non-interference in their internal affairs. Egypt believes that supporting the Somali Federal Government is the only way to ensure Somalia's recovery and its pivotal role in the region. These assurances come at a time of political tension in the region, as Egypt seeks to thwart any external ambitions that might exploit the current circumstances to impose a new reality detrimental to the interests of the brotherly Somali people.

A call for international solidarity

In concluding its diplomatic efforts, Egypt calls upon the international community and regional partners to unite in support of development and stability efforts in Somalia, rather than engaging in power struggles that could further complicate the situation. The stability of Somalia is a cornerstone of security in East Africa, and any instability there will have negative repercussions for all.
