Dakar Rally Saudi Arabia 2026: 76 medical specialists for the safety of the competitors

The 2026 Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia is poised to be another exceptional edition, adding to the Kingdom's impressive record of hosting major international sporting events. Amidst the fierce competition between engines and sand dunes, a paramount priority, no less important than winning the race, is the safety of the participants. To ensure this, a comprehensive medical team with extensive experience in handling the harshest climatic and geographical conditions of the Kingdom's vast desert has been mobilized.
Medical equipment with international standards
The medical team for the 2026 Dakar Rally is a cornerstone of this global event's success, responsible for providing a comprehensive safety net for all competitors and organizers. The organizing committee has equipped a state-of-the-art field hospital at the bivouac, serving as a fully integrated center for receiving and treating emergencies immediately, adhering to the highest medical standards.
This desert "White Army" consists of 76 qualified medical personnel, led by 35 doctors specializing in various fields. Their expertise spans emergency medicine, anesthesiology, orthopedics, general surgery, gastroenterology, and two radiologists. Supporting this team are 24 nurses and anesthetists for urgent surgical interventions, along with 10 physiotherapists to ensure the athletes' rehabilitation and return to competition or a swift recovery.
24/7 Logistics and Air Support
Due to the rugged terrain and the length of the racecourses, the medical team relies on a fleet of five helicopters. Four are dedicated to medical missions and rapid evacuation, while two remain on standby, with one helicopter equipped for night flights to ensure a response at any time. The ground medical facility can accommodate approximately 150 patients daily and is equipped with advanced imaging technologies such as X-ray and ultrasound. Direct coordination is in place for the transfer of critical cases to specialized hospitals in major cities when necessary.
Dakar Saudi Arabia: A Continuing Success Story
The 2026 edition cannot be discussed in isolation from the historical context of the Dakar Rally in the Kingdom. Since the rally moved to its third chapter in the Middle East and Saudi Arabia began hosting it in 2020, the race has become a platform to showcase the Kingdom's unique geographical diversity, from the majestic Empty Quarter desert to the mountains of Neom and the varied terrain of AlUla. This diversity presents enormous logistical and medical challenges, which the Kingdom has managed with remarkable efficiency year after year, cementing its position as a safe and professional destination for extreme motorsports.
The impact of Vision 2030 on the sports sector
This meticulous attention to participant safety and the provision of state-of-the-art medical technology is part of a broader strategy aligned with the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which places great emphasis on the sports sector and quality of life. The ability to organize an event spanning thousands of kilometers and ensure the safety of hundreds of participants reflects the Kingdom's advanced infrastructure and organizational capabilities. Furthermore, the continued hosting of the Dakar Rally enhances sports tourism and draws global attention to Saudi Arabia's cultural and natural heritage, thanks to the unwavering support the sector receives from the wise leadership – may God protect them.
