Pilgrims at the Namira Mosque: Prayer and devotion on the Day of Arafah
In a majestic display of faith, as the sun rose on the ninth of Dhul-Hijjah, throngs of pilgrims flocked to the sacred plains of Arafat to perform the most important pillar of Hajj, answering the call of their Creator and deeply aware of the significance of the time and place. On this momentous day, millions gathered at the Namira Mosque and its surrounding courtyards to perform the combined and shortened prayers of Dhuhr and Asr, following the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), in an atmosphere of tranquility and peace, filled with the sounds of supplication and prayer.
Historical background and importance of the Day of Arafah
The Day of Arafah holds an exceptional place in the hearts of Muslims. It is not only the essential pillar of Hajj, without which the pilgrimage is invalid, but it is also a day of forgiveness and deliverance from Hellfire, as mentioned in the Prophetic traditions. The significance of this place stems from the Farewell Sermon delivered by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in the valley of Arnah, the site upon which the Namirah Mosque was later built. Part of the mosque lies within the valley of Arnah, which is not part of Arafat, while the other part lies within the boundaries of the Arafat plain, making it a unique geographical and religious landmark. Standing at Arafat and praying in the Namirah Mosque are a living embodiment of the unity of the Muslim Ummah, where Muslims from all corners of the earth, of diverse colors and languages, gather in the same attire and with the same goal: seeking the pleasure of God.
Saudi efforts to serve the pilgrims
To ensure pilgrims can perform their rituals with ease and peace of mind, the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, represented by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance and other entities, has deployed a comprehensive and extensive system of services. This year, the Namira Mosque witnessed intensive preparations as part of the operational plan for the 1447 AH Hajj season, aimed at enhancing its operational and service efficiency to accommodate millions of pilgrims. These efforts included:
- Infrastructure preparations: The mosque and its courtyards have been furnished with luxurious carpets covering an area of over 125,000 square meters, and air conditioning and air purification systems have been developed to ensure a comfortable atmosphere despite the high temperatures.
- To combat heat stress: To counter the hot weather, 19 huge umbrellas were installed in the back courtyard of the mosque, and 150 water misting fans were operated to cool the atmosphere, in addition to coating the floors with heat-reflective materials, which contributes to a significant reduction in temperature.
- Support services: 70 water cooling units were provided, audio systems and surveillance cameras were upgraded, and entry and exit traffic was organized through 72 doors to ensure smooth flow and prevent overcrowding.
The global impact of the Arafat scene
The impact of the Day of Arafah extends far beyond the pilgrims present at the holy site, reaching the entire Muslim world. The Arafah sermon is broadcast live from the Namira Mosque and translated into dozens of languages, its noble message reaching millions globally, calling for tolerance, unity, and the rejection of division. The successful management of this massive human gathering reflects the Kingdom's exceptional organizational capabilities and reinforces its position as a leader of the Muslim world and custodian of the Two Holy Mosques. This annual event also serves as an opportunity to strengthen human bonds among the peoples of the world and showcases the true image of Islam as a religion of peace and mercy.
Integrated guidance system
In addition to operational services, the Ministry intensified its awareness and guidance programs, where 150 digital screens were operated to broadcast awareness messages in different languages, and 200 preachers and 50 translators were assigned to answer the pilgrims’ legitimate inquiries, enabling the guests of God to perform their rituals with insight and knowledge, and embodying the extent of the care that the wise leadership gives to serving the pilgrims and achieving a safe and easy faith journey for them.
