The Saudi Ministry of Commerce announced the implementation of a massive operational plan to secure food supplies for the Hajj season, revealing the provision of over 712 million essential commodities to retail outlets in Mecca and the holy sites. These efforts are part of the Kingdom's extensive preparations to ensure the comfort and safety of pilgrims and meet all their needs during their rituals.

The quantities supplied included a detailed breakdown of the most consumed items, encompassing over 328.9 million bottles of bottled water, 153 million packages of various dairy products and juices, and 108 million soft drinks. In addition, more than 98 million loaves of bread and 24.4 million ice blocks were provided, reflecting the scale of preparations to meet the anticipated demand from millions of pilgrims.

The historical and logistical context of Hajj management

Managing crowds and ensuring their needs are met during the Hajj season is a massive logistical challenge that Saudi Arabia addresses annually. Over the decades, supply chain management mechanisms have evolved significantly. From relying on individual efforts and local merchants, it has evolved into an integrated system overseen by multiple government entities within the framework of Vision 2030 and the Guests of God Service Program. This system aims to utilize the latest technologies in managing supply and distribution chains and monitoring inventory to guarantee the uninterrupted flow of goods and prevent any shortages that could negatively impact the pilgrims' experience.

Importance and implications

Domestically, this massive operation stimulates the economic cycle in Mecca and Medina, creating thousands of seasonal jobs and supporting the transportation, storage, and retail sectors. It also enhances the capabilities of national companies in the food and beverage industries. Internationally, the Kingdom's success in meeting the needs of millions of pilgrims from around the world reinforces its position as a leader of the Islamic world and custodian of the Two Holy Mosques. Providing essential goods at stable prices and high quality leaves a positive impression on pilgrims and reflects the Kingdom's ability to efficiently and effectively manage one of the world's largest gatherings of people.

The Ministry of Commerce confirmed the continuation of its field inspection tours of commercial establishments, markets and sales outlets in Makkah and the holy sites, in order to verify the availability of basic goods and products, monitor any commercial violations, and raise the level of readiness to ensure the continuity of food supplies throughout the Hajj season, in order to serve the guests of God and facilitate their performance of their religious duty.
