Haramain High-Speed Railway | An advanced travel experience for pilgrims
The Haramain High-Speed Railway is witnessing a surge in popularity among pilgrims traveling between Medina and Mecca, offering a modern transportation experience that combines exceptional speed with ultimate comfort, facilitating the performance of Hajj and Umrah rituals with ease. This massive project is considered one of the most important transportation options serving visitors to the Two Holy Mosques, representing the fastest, safest, and most reliable means of travel connecting the two holy cities.
Project background and strategic objectives
The Haramain High-Speed Railway project is a cornerstone of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, which aims to develop infrastructure and enhance the quality of services provided to pilgrims. Officially launched in September 2018, the project represents a significant leap forward in the Kingdom's public transportation system. More than just a railway line, it is a strategic response to the ever-increasing number of Hajj and Umrah pilgrims annually, aiming to provide an environmentally friendly mass transit system that reduces traffic congestion on highways and improves road safety.
Full readiness for the Hajj season
In preparation for the Hajj season, Saudi Railways (SAR) announced an increase in the operational capacity of the Haramain High-Speed Railway to over 2.21 million seats, reflecting its ongoing expansion in serving pilgrims. These measures underscore SAR's comprehensive readiness to provide world-class transportation services. The operational plan includes 5,308 trips during the season, an increase of approximately 11% compared to last year, offering pilgrims a wider range of options. During peak times, the number of daily trips will reach 142, ensuring smoother pilgrim movement and reducing waiting times.
Importance and impact at both the local and international levels
Domestically, the Haramain High-Speed Railway plays a vital role in alleviating pressure on the road network between major cities in the Western Region and enhancing public safety. It also contributes to stimulating economic and tourism activity in the cities it traverses. Internationally, the project reinforces the Kingdom's position as a leader in crowd management and providing advanced logistical services to serve millions of Muslims from around the world. It presents a modern image of the Kingdom's development and significantly improves the spiritual experience for pilgrims, making their journeys more comfortable and safe.
