Iraq and China drew in the 2026 AFC U-23 Championship

The Iraqi Olympic team began their campaign in the 2026 AFC U-23 Championship with a goalless draw against China in a hard-fought match held this evening at Prince Faisal bin Fahd Stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This match was part of the first round of Group D in the continental tournament, which is being hosted by Saudi Arabia and has garnered significant media and public attention.

Despite the mutual attacking attempts witnessed during the minutes of the match, and the relative control of the Iraqi team over the maneuvering area in the middle of the field, haste in the final touch and the solidity of the Chinese defense prevented the chances from being converted into goals, so the two teams shared the points of the match at the beginning of the journey.

In a related match within the same group, the Australian national team asserted its dominance with a valuable 2-1 victory over Thailand at Al Shabab Stadium. With these results, Australia leads Group D with 3 points, while Iraq and China are tied for second and third place with one point each, and Thailand sits at the bottom of the group with no points.

This tournament holds immense importance that transcends mere competition for the title. The AFC U-23 Asian Cup is the premier platform for discovering future stars in Asia and a primary feeder system for senior national teams. The Iraqi national team boasts a distinguished history in this age group, having won the inaugural title in 2013, and aims to reclaim its former glory in the 2026 edition, competing strongly to reach the final stages.

Saudi Arabia’s hosting of this tournament also reflects the great development in its sports infrastructure and its ability to organize major continental events, giving the participating Arab teams an additional morale boost thanks to the expected public support.

All eyes are now on the second round scheduled for next Sunday, where the Iraqi national team faces a crucial challenge against Thailand to make up for the draw and secure a place in the quarter-finals, while the Chinese national team clashes with the strength of the leading Australian national team, in a round that may significantly shape the profile of the qualifiers.
