Jeddah Municipality designates 10 locations for livestock sales during Hajj season

Jeddah Municipality's efforts to regulate livestock markets during the Hajj season

In a proactive step aimed at improving services for citizens and residents, the Jeddah Municipality has designated 10 temporary municipal sites for the sale of livestock by mobile vehicles during this year's Hajj season (1447 AH). This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to regulate buying and selling operations, ensure the highest food safety standards, and reduce haphazard practices that could negatively impact the urban landscape and public health, all in full coordination with the relevant security authorities.

Historical context and the importance of regulating livestock sales

Historically, the Hajj season and Eid al-Adha are linked to the ritual of sacrifice, significantly increasing the demand for livestock across Saudi Arabia, particularly in Jeddah, the gateway to the Two Holy Mosques. In past decades, the unregulated sale of livestock in streets and residential areas posed significant environmental and health challenges, in addition to traffic congestion and unsightly waste. This highlighted the urgent need for intervention by relevant authorities to regulate this vital sector. The allocation of designated livestock markets in Jeddah reflects the administrative and regulatory progress the Kingdom is witnessing and aligns with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 to improve quality of life, protect the environment, and enhance environmental health in Saudi cities.

Expected impact of the decision at the local and regional levels

This regulation has a wide-ranging positive impact. Locally, the decision ensures smooth traffic flow in Jeddah's streets and facilitates residents' access to designated and well-equipped livestock markets. It also guarantees consumers the purchase of healthy and inspected sacrificial animals, thus reducing the risk of zoonotic diseases. Regionally, the Jeddah Municipality's successful management of this vital sector during the Hajj season sets a benchmark for urban planning, crowd management, and managing religious events, further solidifying the Kingdom's position as a leading nation in providing the best services to pilgrims and residents.

The Municipality affirmed that its field inspection teams, in cooperation with security authorities, will be vigilant in addressing any violations, and that the municipal regulations and penalties will be strictly enforced against anyone who violates the applicable rules and instructions to ensure a safe and healthy Hajj season for all.
