The third outlet of the Makkah Route Initiative was inaugurated in Lahore, Pakistan

Launch of the Makkah Route Initiative in Lahore

In a strategic move reflecting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's commitment to facilitating the journey of pilgrims, the Kingdom today inaugurated the third Makkah Route Initiative in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, specifically in the city of Lahore. The inauguration ceremony was held at the initiative's terminal in Allama Iqbal International Airport, with prominent figures from both countries in attendance, underscoring the depth of bilateral relations and joint cooperation in serving pilgrims. The event was attended by His Excellency Sardar Muhammad Yousaf, Pakistan's Minister of Religious Affairs, His Excellency Nawaf bin Saeed Al-Maliki, the Saudi Ambassador to Pakistan, and Major General Dr. Saleh bin Saad Al-Murabba, Director General of Passports.

Historical context and objectives of the initiative within Vision 2030

is The Makkah Route Initiative one of the most prominent initiatives of the Saudi Ministry of Interior and falls under the Guests of God Service Program, a key component of Saudi Vision 2030. This pioneering initiative was first launched in 1438 AH (2017 CE) with the aim of bringing about a qualitative leap in the services provided to pilgrims performing Hajj and Umrah. The initiative seeks to provide high-quality services to pilgrims from participating countries and facilitate their travel to the Kingdom, reflecting the wise leadership's commitment to harnessing all available technological and human resources to serve Islam and Muslims.

Package of services provided to facilitate the Hajj journey

The initiative offers a comprehensive system of services starting from the country of departure. This includes receiving pilgrims and completing their procedures in their home countries easily and conveniently, starting with issuing the Hajj visa electronically and taking biometric data (fingerprints), and continuing with the tasks of the General Directorate of Passports to complete entry procedures into the Kingdom at the airport of the country of departure, after verifying the availability of all necessary health requirements.

Furthermore, the services include baggage tagging and sorting according to transportation and accommodation arrangements within the Kingdom. Upon arrival at the Kingdom's entry points, pilgrims are transferred directly to designated buses that transport them to their accommodations in the Makkah and Madinah regions via dedicated routes, while partner agencies handle the delivery of their luggage, thus saving them the hassle of waiting at Saudi airports.

Regional and international importance and influence

The opening of the third gateway in Pakistan is of paramount importance both regionally and internationally. Pakistan is one of the largest Muslim countries in terms of the number of pilgrims annually, and expanding the initiative to include Lahore will alleviate the burden on Pakistani pilgrims and reduce their waiting times. This measure also enhances operational efficiency at Saudi airports and reduces congestion during the Hajj season. Internationally, this step highlights the Kingdom's leading role in crowd management and the use of modern technology to facilitate international travel, setting a global example to be emulated.

Integrating national efforts for the success of the initiative

The Ministry of Interior is implementing this initiative for the eighth year through close cooperation and institutional integration with several governmental and private entities. These include the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Health, Hajj and Umrah, and Media, in addition to the General Authority of Civil Aviation, the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority, and the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA). The General Authority for Endowments, the Guests of God Service Program, and the General Directorate of Passports are also collaborating to ensure the initiative's success, in conjunction with the digital partner (stc Group). These joint efforts have resulted in serving more than 1,254,994 pilgrims since the initiative's launch, confirming its success and sustainability.
