The Kafa’a Innovates Campaign: Turning Patents into Projects at King Faisal University
A leap towards a knowledge economy: Launching the "Kafu Innovates" campaign
In a strategic move reflecting the commitment of higher education institutions in Saudi Arabia to achieving the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, King Faisal University launched a pioneering national campaign under the slogan "Kafu Innovates... Towards a Leading Researcher for Business." This unique initiative aims to strengthen the innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem, empowering academics and researchers to transform their creative ideas and patents into impactful and sustainable startups, thus contributing to diversifying national income sources and reducing dependence on oil.
The historical and national context of the role of universities
Historically, universities have primarily focused on education and graduating qualified personnel for the job market. However, with global economic shifts and the launch of Vision 2030, the urgent need has arisen for Saudi universities to transform into "third-generation universities" that are research-, development-, and investment-oriented. King Faisal University, founded in 1975 in Al-Ahsa Governorate, is demonstrating its pioneering role in leading this transformation through its "Kafu Tabtakir" (Capable Innovates) campaign, moving from simply producing knowledge to commercializing and investing in it to serve the local community and the national economy.
Quality programs to support innovators and entrepreneurs
The campaign includes a suite of specialized and intensive programs designed to cover all stages of innovation. Among the highlights are the "Design Hackathon," which aims to generate ideas and solve problems creatively; the "Innovation Pioneers Camp," which offers intensive training in prototyping; and the "Certified Innovation Practitioner" program. The events also include an inspiration forum and a showcase of successful spin-off companies that have successfully entered the market.
University leadership vision and providing an integrated environment
The university's Vice President for Graduate Studies and Scientific Research, Professor Abdulrahman Al-Laili, affirmed that this initiative provides a comprehensive and supportive environment for developing ideas and transforming them into competitive projects capable of withstanding market challenges. He explained that this strategic step comes with the direct support and guidance of the university president, Professor Adel bin Mohammed Abu Zanada, in his belief in the importance of achieving sustainable development and enhancing the academic institution's standing both locally and internationally.
Expected economic and social impact
On the economic front, the head of the Innovation Zone, Professor Abdullah Al-Furaidan, revealed the campaign's strategic direction, which aims to bring about a "qualitative shift" in the concept of knowledge outputs. The goal is to transform these outputs into viable economic products, representing a comprehensive journey from abstract ideas to practical application and the establishment of knowledge-based investment entities. Regionally and internationally, this approach will contribute to raising the university's ranking in global innovation indices.
Spreading the culture of entrepreneurship in society
The campaign wasn't confined to academic circles; it extended to innovative community initiatives aimed at instilling a culture of innovation in future generations. These initiatives include "My Home Research Entrepreneur" and the "Window of Transition" program, all of which strive to cultivate a comprehensive entrepreneurial culture and make innovation a way of life that contributes to building a bright and sustainable future for the Kingdom.
