A hospital in Mecca saves a pilgrim with delicate surgery for a rare intestinal perforation
Urgent medical intervention saves the life of a pilgrim in Mecca
In a medical achievement that highlights the high efficiency of the Saudi health system during the Hajj season, a specialized medical team at King Faisal Hospital, a member of the Makkah Health Cluster, succeeded in saving the life of a pilgrim who suffered a rare and complex case of perforation in the small intestine, enabling him to complete his rituals in good health.
Emergency case details and immediate diagnosis
The pilgrim arrived at the hospital's emergency department via the Saudi Red Crescent teams, suffering from severe and persistent abdominal pain, accompanied by a high fever and extreme difficulty moving. The medical team immediately began the necessary clinical and laboratory examinations, which necessitated an urgent CT scan. The scan revealed a sharp metallic object that had penetrated the wall of the small intestine, causing a perforation and leakage of intestinal contents into the abdominal cavity. This was a critical medical condition requiring immediate surgical intervention to avoid serious, potentially life-threatening complications such as acute peritonitis and septicemia.
A complex surgery that was successful
Based on the accurate diagnosis, the surgical team, led by consultant surgeon Dr. Mohammed Ashour and including specialists Dr. Ibrahim Kharoub and Dr. Majed Al-Zahrani, decided to perform an urgent exploratory surgery. The delicate surgery lasted four hours, during which the medical team was able to pinpoint the location of the perforation, remove the foreign metallic object, and repair the intestine with high efficiency. The abdominal cavity was also completely cleared of any infections resulting from the leak. Thanks to God, and then to the rapid response and early diagnosis, the patient's condition stabilized without requiring admission to the intensive care unit.
Healthcare during Hajj: An integrated system to serve the pilgrims
This medical success comes within the context of the massive efforts undertaken annually by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to provide a comprehensive and free healthcare system for pilgrims. Historically, the Kingdom has given the highest priority to serving pilgrims, mobilizing all its resources and equipping a vast network of hospitals and seasonal health centers in Mecca, Medina, and the holy sites. This system includes highly trained medical, nursing, and paramedic staff, equipped with the latest medical technologies to handle all emergency cases, from heatstroke and heat exhaustion to complex surgical and cardiac cases.
The importance of achievement and its impact within the framework of Vision 2030
This achievement extends beyond saving a single life; it reflects the bright image of the Saudi healthcare sector and its ability to handle the most complex medical cases. Locally, this success underscores the high operational readiness of hospitals in the Holy City of Mecca. Internationally, it reinforces the Kingdom's reputation as a safe destination for Hajj pilgrimage, reassuring millions of Muslims worldwide of the availability of superior medical care. This excellence aligns with the objectives of the healthcare transformation program and the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which aims to provide a leading model in healthcare and prioritize the safety and health of pilgrims.
The pilgrim has begun to recover gradually and reassuringly under the continuous supervision of the medical staff, in preparation for enabling him to complete his Hajj rituals while enjoying full health and well-being.
