Al-Muaiqly: Ramadan is the month of piety and the Quran – Sermon from the Grand Mosque

The Imam and preacher of the Grand Mosque, Sheikh Dr. Maher Al-Muaiqly, advised the Muslim masses to fear God Almighty, stressing that it is the true provision for salvation in this world and the hereafter, during the Friday sermon he delivered in the Grand Mosque, amidst a spiritual atmosphere anticipating the arrival of the blessed month of Ramadan.

Piety is the path to success and the measure of acceptance

His Eminence began his sermon by emphasizing that piety is the only path to success and dignity, pointing out that God Almighty has provided the pious with a way out of every hardship and sustenance from sources they could never imagine. He cited a comprehensive definition of piety: “To act in obedience to God, guided by His light, hoping for His reward, and to refrain from disobeying God, guided by His light, fearing His punishment.” Al-Muaiqly explained that the acceptance of good deeds is contingent upon attaining this piety, in accordance with the verse: “Indeed, God only accepts from the pious.” This makes it the fundamental pillar upon which Muslims must build their acts of worship, especially with the approach of blessed seasons.

Ramadan: A divine blessing and an opportunity for change

In his address on the virtues of certain times, the Imam of the Grand Mosque explained that God Almighty, in His infinite wisdom, has distinguished between His creation in terms of status and rank, and has chosen the blessed month of Ramadan, which we are now approaching, as one of the most special months. He pointed out that this month is a golden opportunity that must be seized to rectify our course and renew our covenant with God. This reminder comes at a time when the eyes of the Muslim world are turned towards Mecca, where the sermons from the Two Holy Mosques serve as spiritual guidance for millions of Muslims, thus lending these exhortations paramount importance in preparing hearts and minds to welcome the holy month.

Fasting is a school of patience and devotion

Dr. Al-Muaiqly addressed the virtues of fasting, explaining that it is an act of worship that achieves the highest degree of devotion to God Almighty, as the worshipper abstains from food, drink, and other desires for the sake of his Generous Lord. He emphasized that fasting teaches patience, and those who are patient will be rewarded beyond measure. He also mentioned the great reward that God has prepared for those who fast, having designated a gate in Paradise called Al-Rayyan for them, through which no one else will enter, as a tribute to their obedience and patience.

Social solidarity and contemplation of the Quran

In concluding his sermon, the Imam of the Grand Mosque emphasized the importance of frequently reciting and reflecting upon the meanings of the Holy Quran during Ramadan, the month of the Quran. He also highlighted the social and humanitarian dimension of this religious duty, noting that hunger and thirst remind Muslims of the plight of the poor and needy, thus stirring feelings of compassion and solidarity within the Muslim community. He affirmed that Ramadan is a month of blessings, divine favors, and forgiveness of sins, praying that God grants Muslims the opportunity to reach this month in good health, well-being, security, and faith.
