The National Afforestation Initiative signs an agreement to plant 300,000 trees by 2030
In a significant step towards achieving the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's ambitious environmental goals, the National Afforestation Program signed a memorandum of understanding with the Second Airports Cluster Company, aiming to plant 300,000 trees by 2030. The signing took place during the Saudi Environment Week exhibition, held in Riyadh under the theme "Your Impact is Green," in the presence of the Deputy Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Engineer Mansour bin Hilal Al-Mashiti, underscoring the strategic importance the government places on such partnerships.
An ambitious national context: Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative
This agreement is an integral part of broader national efforts under the umbrella of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, which places environmental sustainability and improved quality of life at the heart of its objectives. This initiative is a practical application of the goals of the Saudi Green Initiative, launched by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in 2021, which aims to plant 10 billion trees across the Kingdom in the coming decades, rehabilitate millions of hectares of degraded land, and combat desertification—a historic step in addressing environmental challenges.
Dimensions of the agreement and its expected impact
The memorandum of understanding extends beyond simply planting trees; it encompasses vital awareness and community engagement aspects. Under the agreement, the Second Airports Cluster will provide dedicated spaces within its airports for awareness events and pavilions aimed at raising environmental awareness among travelers and the community about the importance of vegetation and how to preserve it. Furthermore, the National Afforestation Program's educational content will be displayed on screens inside the airports, ensuring that the environmental message reaches a wide segment of the local and international public.
Strategic importance at the local and regional levels
Locally, planting 300,000 trees will improve air quality, moderate temperatures in urban and airport areas, reduce dust storms, and enhance biodiversity. It will also improve the overall aesthetic appeal and provide green spaces that contribute to a better quality of life for residents. Regionally and internationally, this partnership reflects the Kingdom's strong commitment to combating climate change and contributing to global sustainability goals. Such initiatives reinforce Saudi Arabia's position as a regional leader in environmental action, provide a model for engaging the private sector to achieve major national environmental objectives, and demonstrate that economic development can go hand in hand with environmental protection.
