Najran and Sharurah weather: Warning of blowing dust and suspended particles
The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia issued a weather alert today for the Najran region and Sharurah governorate, warning of dust storms and blowing sand affecting the area until 7:00 PM. The center explained that this weather phenomenon will lead to a significant decrease in horizontal visibility, expected to range between 3 and 5 kilometers.
According to the alert, the affected areas in Najran include the city of Najran and the governorates of Badr Al-Janoub, Thar, Yadmah, Khubash, and Habuna. A similar alert was issued for Sharurah Governorate, indicating active winds and blowing dust that will have the same effect on visibility. The center urged citizens and residents in these areas to take precautions, especially drivers and those with respiratory conditions.
The climatic context of dust phenomena in the south of the Kingdom
Dust and sandstorms are a common weather phenomenon in Saudi Arabia, particularly in southern regions like Najran and Sharurah, due to their proximity to the Rub' al Khali, the world's largest sand desert. These storms are typically caused by surface winds that stir up sand and dry soil, especially during seasonal transitions. The region's geography, characterized by loose, sandy soil and sparse vegetation, contributes to the ease with which these dust storms form and spread widely, making them a regular part of the area's climate.
The importance and expected effects of the warning
This warning is of paramount importance on several levels, most notably public safety and health. Locally, reduced visibility directly impacts traffic safety on highways and local roads, increasing the likelihood of accidents. Air traffic at Najran Regional Airport may also be affected, potentially leading to delays or rescheduling of some flights.
From a health perspective, dust particles pose a risk to public health, as the fine particles can irritate the respiratory system and eyes, and exacerbate conditions for those with asthma, allergies, and chronic lung diseases. Therefore, health authorities, such as the Ministry of Health and Civil Defense, typically recommend that residents stay indoors as much as possible during this period, keep windows closed, and wear protective masks when going out is necessary.
The National Center of Meteorology emphasizes the need to follow the updates and weather reports issued by it in order to take the necessary precautionary measures, noting that the situation will continue until this evening, with an invitation to everyone to adhere to the safety instructions issued by the competent authorities.
