The Meteorology Department warns of moderate rain and flash floods in Asir and Abha today

The National Center for Meteorology issued an important weather alert today for the Kingdom, warning of thunderstorms and moderate rainfall in the Asir region. The center explained in its report that this weather system is not limited to rain alone, but also includes accompanying effects that could pose a risk to public safety. These include strong surface winds, significantly reduced or near-zero horizontal visibility, hail, flash floods in valleys and ravines, and the possibility of lightning strikes.
Affected areas and timing of the event
The National Center for Meteorology has precisely identified the areas covered by this alert, with the weather conditions concentrated in the city of Abha and the governorates of Khamis Mushait and Ahad Rafidah . The center indicated that these weather fluctuations will continue until 8:00 PM today, urging residents and highway users in those areas to exercise caution.
General weather forecast for the Kingdom
In a related context, weather forecasts indicate that most regions of the Kingdom will experience unstable weather conditions, characterized by moderate to heavy thunderstorms on Friday and Saturday, February 6th and 7th. This weather pattern is typical for this time of year, as humid air currents contribute to the formation of cumulonimbus clouds.
The climate of the Asir region
The Asir region possesses a unique geographical and climatic character that distinguishes it from other regions of the Kingdom. Located on the towering Sarawat Mountains, this topography plays a pivotal role in attracting cumulonimbus clouds and increasing the likelihood of rainfall throughout the year, not just during winter. Rainfall in Asir is a vital source of groundwater and agricultural water. However, the mountainous terrain and steep slopes make flash floods rapid and powerful, necessitating extra caution and avoiding areas in wadis (dry riverbeds) during rainfall.
Safety guidelines and the importance of follow-up
The National Center of Meteorology urged all citizens and residents to follow its official reports and warnings, which can be accessed through its website, the "Anwaa" app, and its verified social media accounts. Relevant authorities, including the Civil Defense, consistently emphasize the importance of staying away from water accumulations and avoiding crossing wadis (valleys) regardless of water levels, to ensure the safety of lives and property.
