The Meteorology Department warns of possible rain and flash floods in Riyadh and Jazan today
Advanced warnings from the National Center for Meteorology
The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia issued a series of advanced warnings on Thursday regarding unstable weather conditions affecting large parts of the Riyadh and Jazan regions. The center urged citizens and residents to exercise caution, stay away from valleys and floodplains, and continuously monitor weather updates.
Weather details for the Riyadh region
The center warned of moderate rainfall in the Riyadh region, including the governorates of Al-Quway'iyah and Ar-Rayn. This rainfall is expected to be accompanied by strong winds that may stir up dust and sand, leading to near-zero horizontal visibility. The report also warned of the possibility of hail, flash floods, and thunderstorms. In a separate warning, the center indicated the possibility of heavy rainfall in the governorates of Ad-Dawadmi and Afif, with the same accompanying weather phenomena, thus increasing the risk level in those areas.
Warnings specific to the Jazan region
In the southwest of the Kingdom, the center warned of moderate rainfall in the Jazan region, which may be accompanied by strong winds that could reduce horizontal visibility. The warnings include the governorates of Al-Harath, Al-Dayer Bani Malik, Al-Raith, Al-Ardah, Al-Aydabi, Fifa, and Haroub. There is an increased chance of hail, flash floods, and thunderstorms. The center explained that this weather condition is expected to continue, God willing, until 9:00 PM this evening.
Climate context and the importance of warnings
These warnings come amidst the frequent weather fluctuations experienced in Saudi Arabia during seasonal transitions. The Kingdom's diverse geography, ranging from the arid desert regions of Riyadh to the mountainous highlands of Jazan, makes it susceptible to varying weather patterns. The National Center of Meteorology is the official body responsible for monitoring the atmosphere and providing accurate information to protect lives and property. Its alerts play a vital role in enabling relevant authorities, such as the Civil Defense, to prepare for emergencies.
Expected impacts and the importance of response
Such weather conditions have a direct impact on public safety and daily life. Strong winds and poor visibility increase the risk of traffic accidents on highways, while flash floods in valleys pose a significant danger to hikers and residents of nearby areas. Regionally, these rainfall events are part of broader weather systems affecting the Arabian Peninsula, contributing to groundwater replenishment, but simultaneously requiring infrastructure capable of handling large volumes of water to prevent flooding in cities and villages.
