Niklas Süle announces his retirement from football at the age of 30 | Shock for Dortmund

A surprising decision shakes the Bundesliga

In a surprising move that has shaken the German football world, Borussia Dortmund's stalwart defender Niklas Süle has announced his decision to retire at the end of the 2025-2026 season. This shocking decision comes at a time when Süle is still only 30 years old, an age many consider the peak of a defender's career, raising numerous questions about the reasons behind his life-altering decision.

The moment of fear that decided everything

Süle revealed that the turning point came after he suffered a knee injury during his team's match against Hoffenheim last month. Initially, he was terrified that it was his third cruciate ligament tear, one of the most serious injuries in sports. In emotional comments reported by the BBC, Süle said: "After the initial tests, I thought it was my cruciate ligament again. I went to the bathroom and cried for 10 minutes.".

He added: “But after an MRI scan the following day, I received good news that the ligament was fine. However, I realized at that moment that it was time to end my career. I didn’t want to risk another serious injury that could affect my life after football.”.

A touching farewell message via Instagram

On his official Instagram account, Süle addressed fans with an emotional message: “It is with a heavy heart that I announce today that my journey in the world of professional football is drawing to a close.” He continued, “Football has never been just a game for me; it has been my life, my passion, and my greatest challenge. Every moment on the pitch, every victory, every defeat, and all the support you, the fans, have given me will forever be etched in my heart.” He explained, “Unfortunately, my body has clearly shown its limitations in recent years, and after making several difficult decisions, it is time to say goodbye.”.

A career marked by both success and injuries

Niklas Süle began his professional career with Hoffenheim, where his physical strength and defensive prowess caught the eye, paving the way for his big-money move to German giants Bayern Munich in 2017. During his time with the Bavarian club, Süle enjoyed the most successful period of his career, winning the Bundesliga title five times and achieving the ultimate feat of winning the Champions League in 2020 as part of a historic sextuple-winning team. However, this period was not without its challenges, as he suffered a second cruciate ligament injury in 2019. In 2022, he moved on a free transfer to arch-rivals Borussia Dortmund.

The impact of retirement on Dortmund and the German national team

Niklas Süle's retirement will leave a significant void in Borussia Dortmund's backline, as the club will lose a defender with extensive international experience and leadership qualities. His decision also represents a blow to the German national team, "Die Mannschaft," for which Süle was a key player, having earned 49 caps, participated in two World Cups, and contributed to their victory in the 2017 Confederations Cup. Coaches at both club and country will now have to find replacements to compensate for the absence of a player of his technical and physical caliber.
