The prosthetic limb center in Taiz provides its services to 870 beneficiaries

Integrated medical services restore life to amputees

In a humanitarian effort aimed at alleviating the suffering of those affected by the Yemeni crisis, the Prosthetics and Rehabilitation Center project in Taiz Governorate provided a range of medical services to 870 amputees during April. This vital project, supported by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, represents a lifeline for many who have lost their mobility.

During this period, 2,571 specialized services were provided, including the manufacturing, fitting, fitting, and maintenance of prosthetic limbs, as well as physiotherapy sessions and necessary medical consultations. According to statistics, 61% of beneficiaries were male, while 39% were female. The services were distributed among internally displaced persons (IDPs), representing 18% of beneficiaries, and residents of the governorate, representing 82%, reflecting the project's comprehensiveness and its ability to reach diverse affected groups.

Background of the crisis and its impact on the health sector

Yemen has been embroiled in a devastating conflict for years, leading to the near-total collapse of its basic services, particularly the health sector. Taiz governorate is among the hardest hit, having endured a siege and fierce fighting that has left thousands dead and wounded. Landmines and indiscriminate shelling have resulted in a tragic increase in the number of civilian amputees, including women and children, creating a pressing and ongoing need for rehabilitation services and prosthetic limbs.

In light of this difficult reality, the importance of humanitarian projects such as the Prosthetics Center stands out, as its role is not limited to providing medical services, but extends to include the psychological and social rehabilitation of beneficiaries, helping them to regain their independence and reintegrate into their communities.

Project importance and its local and regional impact

At the local level, the center directly contributes to changing the lives of individuals and their families. Obtaining a prosthetic limb means regaining the ability to walk, work, and study, which positively impacts the economic and social well-being of the entire family. It also restores hope and self-confidence to those affected, alleviating the psychological and physical burden they endure.

At the regional and international levels, this project embodies the continuation of humanitarian efforts undertaken by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, represented by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, to support the Yemeni people in their plight. These initiatives underscore the commitment to providing high-quality assistance that goes beyond emergency relief to include sustainable development and rehabilitation projects, leaving a lasting impact on building the capacity of the Yemeni health sector and alleviating human suffering.
