Thunderstorms in Al-Baha | Saudi Arabia Weather and Forecasts

The Al-Baha region and various parts of its governorates experienced light to moderate rainfall today, accompanied by thunderstorms that added a special beauty to the atmosphere. This also served to renew warnings from relevant authorities about the unstable weather conditions. The rain covered Al-Baha city and its suburbs, Al-Aqiq governorate and its affiliated centers, as well as a number of natural parks, which were transformed into lush green spaces by the rain.

The climatic context of the Al-Baha region

The Al-Baha region, located in the southwestern part of Saudi Arabia, is known for its stunning mountainous terrain within the Sarawat Mountains, which gives it a relatively mild climate compared to other parts of the Kingdom. The spring and summer seasons are characterized by the seasonal activity of cumulonimbus clouds, as the mountainous topography helps to lift and condense humid air, leading to seasonal rainfall that plays a vital role in supporting agriculture and replenishing groundwater and dams in the region. Al-Baha is renowned as a significant domestic tourist destination thanks to its dense forests and temperate climate, and this rainfall is essential for maintaining its unique vegetation.

The importance of the event and its expected impact

Locally, these rains hold dual importance. On the one hand, they are considered a blessing, contributing to the irrigation of the region's renowned farms, such as pomegranate, apricot, and peach orchards, revitalizing natural pastures, and increasing water levels in dams, thus bolstering the region's water and food security. On the other hand, the accompanying thunderstorms and strong winds necessitate caution. The National Center for Meteorology had previously issued warnings regarding the weather conditions, forecasting a continued chance of moderate to heavy thunderstorms that could lead to flash floods, hail, and strong winds stirring up dust and sand across large parts of the Kingdom, including Al-Baha, Asir, Jazan, and Makkah. The Civil Defense Directorate is continuously working to raise awareness among citizens and residents about the importance of staying away from valleys and floodplains during rainfall and following safety guidelines.

Weather forecast and preparedness

This rainfall is part of a broader forecast by the National Center of Meteorology, which monitors weather phenomena around the clock to provide accurate information to the public and government agencies. Early prediction of such weather events enables relevant authorities to prepare and take the necessary measures to deal with any potential emergency, such as flash floods in valleys, thus reducing risks to life and property and ensuring the safe continuation of daily life.
