In a strategic move reflecting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's rapid development in the technology and innovation sector, the Global Partnership for Artificial Intelligence (GPAI), operating under the auspices of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), announced the Kingdom's official accession as an active member. This step further solidifies the Kingdom's position as a pivotal player in shaping the future of emerging technologies on the international stage.
Representing the Kingdom and the pioneering role of "SDAIA"
The Kingdom is represented at this international forum by the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), a testament to the tireless efforts and unwavering support the technology sector receives from His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince, Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of SDAIA. This representation aims to share the Kingdom's pioneering experience in digital transformation and contribute to establishing the regulatory and ethical frameworks that govern the use of artificial intelligence globally.
Context of the global partnership and its objectives
The Global Partnership for Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) is a multilateral initiative launched with the support of the G7. It aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice in artificial intelligence by supporting advanced research and applied activities. The partnership currently comprises 46 countries, bringing together experts from governments, civil society, academia, and industry to work together on developing AI that is grounded in human rights, inclusivity, diversity, innovation, and economic growth.
The strategic and economic importance of joining
The Kingdom's joining this partnership carries profound strategic implications, as it aligns perfectly with the objectives of "Vision 2030," which aims to make the Kingdom a global hub for technology and data. This participation is expected to contribute to:
- Attracting quality investments: Enhancing the confidence of major technology companies and entrepreneurs in the Kingdom’s regulatory environment, thus opening the door to foreign direct investment in the technology sector.
- Knowledge localization: Exchanging experiences with member states and global research institutions, which accelerates the localization of advanced technologies and the building of national capabilities.
- Boosting the digital economy: Increasing the contribution of the digital economy and artificial intelligence to the gross domestic product, and creating new jobs based on future skills.
International and ethical responsibility
Through its membership, the Kingdom will not only be a recipient of technology but also a partner in global technological decision-making. The Kingdom will actively participate in international dialogues on "responsible artificial intelligence" and contribute to shaping standards that ensure these technologies are used to serve humanity while respecting privacy and data security, reflecting the Kingdom's commitment to international standards and the Sustainable Development Goals.
