The Meteorology Department warns of heavy rain and strong winds in Hail, Asir, and Tabuk

Warning from the National Center for Meteorology

The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia issued a series of advanced warnings on Monday regarding unstable weather conditions affecting several regions, most notably Hail, Asir, and Tabuk. The center warned of varying intensities of rainfall, ranging from light to heavy, accompanied by strong winds that could reach storm force, urging citizens and residents to exercise extreme caution.

Rain and flash floods expected in Hail and Asir

In the Hail region, the center warned of light to moderate rainfall, occasionally accompanied by thunderstorms. This rain will be accompanied by strong winds that will stir up dust and sand, causing a sharp decrease in horizontal visibility, especially on highways and in open areas. The center also warned of the possibility of flash floods in some valleys and ravines and advised people to stay away from these areas. It explained that this weather condition is expected to continue until 8:00 PM.

In the Asir region, the warning was more severe, with the center forecasting heavy rainfall in the city of Abha and the governorates of Khamis Mushait and Ahad Rafidah. This rain will be accompanied by thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds that could lead to near-zero visibility. The center emphasized that the heavy rainfall significantly increases the risk of flash floods and stressed the importance of following Civil Defense guidelines.

Strong winds and high waves in Tabuk

The Tabuk region was not spared from these fluctuations, with the center issuing a special alert warning of strong winds in the governorates of Al Wajh, Umluj, and Duba. Wind speeds are expected to reach between 50 and 59 kilometers per hour, leading to a significant rise in waves along the coasts and near-zero visibility due to dense dust. This weather pattern is also expected to continue until 8:00 PM.

Climate context and the importance of warnings

These weather fluctuations are part of the Kingdom's typical climatic patterns during seasonal transitions, as the country is affected by low-pressure systems originating from the north or the Red Sea. Topography plays a crucial role in determining the intensity of weather phenomena; the mountainous terrain of Asir contributes to cloud formation and heavy rainfall, while the open landscape of Hail makes it more susceptible to strong winds. The warnings issued by the National Center for Meteorology are of paramount importance given the recurring flash flood incidents in the past, as they aim to raise awareness and protect lives and property. Relevant authorities, such as Civil Defense and Highway Patrol, are working to enhance their preparedness to respond to any emergencies that may arise from these weather conditions.
