The Yemeni Shura Council appreciates Saudi Arabia's stance towards the Southern Transitional Council's actions
The Yemeni Shura Council expressed its full support for and deep appreciation of the position issued by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which categorically rejected the unilateral actions and recent military movements carried out by the Southern Transitional Council in the governorates of Hadramawt and Al-Mahra. The Council considered this Saudi position to reflect the Kingdom's unwavering commitment to the stability and territorial integrity of Yemen, and its rejection of any steps that would undermine security in the liberated governorates.
In an official statement carried by the Yemeni news agency Saba, the Shura Council affirmed its support for the Saudi call urging the Southern Transitional Council to immediately end its military escalation and withdraw its forces urgently from the two eastern governorates. The statement emphasized that these actions do not serve the supreme national interest, but rather lead to instability and undermine efforts to unify ranks in the face of the major challenges confronting the country.
Calls to prioritize the national interest
The Shura Council welcomed the joint and intensive efforts exerted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to contain the crisis and ensure the return of the Southern Transitional Council forces to their previous positions. The Council also commended the plan to hand over camps and security sites in Hadramawt and Al-Mahra to the Homeland Shield forces and local authorities, considering it a necessary step to assert state authority and unify security and military decision-making under the umbrella of the Presidential Leadership Council.
Political context and strategic importance
The governorates of Hadramawt and Al-Mahra hold immense strategic and geopolitical importance on the Yemeni map, forming Yemen's strategic depth and possessing a long coastline and significant economic resources. These developments come at a sensitive time, as the legitimate government, supported by the Arab Coalition, seeks to establish security in liberated areas and improve services, making any internal military escalation a hindrance to these efforts.
Observers point out that the formation of the “Homeland Shield” forces came by decision of the Presidential Leadership Council to be a strategic reserve force aimed at maintaining balance and preventing internal clashes, which explains the insistence on handing it the reins of power in areas witnessing tensions, to ensure neutrality and prevent the situation from slipping into side conflicts that affect the course of the main battle and the restoration of the state.
International and regional position
The firm Saudi stance aligns with the international and regional vision that emphasizes the necessity for all Yemeni parties operating under the umbrella of legitimacy to adhere to the Riyadh Agreement and the outcomes of the Yemeni-Yemeni consultations. The internal cohesion of the Presidential Leadership Council, which includes representatives from various forces, including the Southern Transitional Council, is a cornerstone of diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the war in Yemen and reaching a comprehensive political solution.
The Shura Council concluded its statement by calling on the Transitional Council to respond quickly to the calls of reason and wisdom, and to prioritize the interests of the people of the southern governorates and the Yemeni people in general, warning that continued escalation will only serve the interests of the forces lying in wait for Yemen’s security and stability.
