Saturday's weather in Saudi Arabia: Heavy rain and fog covering 9 regions

The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia issued its daily weather Saturday, forecasting continued weather fluctuations affecting large areas of the Kingdom. The report indicated that the chance of thunderstorms, ranging from moderate to heavy, remains, potentially leading to flash floods in valleys and ravines, accompanied by hail and strong winds that will stir up dust and reduce horizontal visibility.

Weather details and affected areas

According to the official statement, heavy rainfall is concentrated in parts of the Riyadh, Qassim, and Eastern Province . In contrast, light to moderate rain is expected in parts of the western and southwestern highlands, specifically in the Makkah, Al-Baha, Asir, and Jazan regions. The center also warned of dense fog that could significantly reduce visibility during the early morning and late night hours in parts of these areas, in addition to surface winds that may stir up dust in parts of the Al-Jawf and Northern Borders regions.

State of the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf

Regarding the maritime situation, the report provided the following details:

  • Red Sea: Northwesterly to northerly winds prevail in the northern and central parts, while southeasterly to southwesterly winds prevail in the southern part, reaching speeds of up to 50 km/h towards the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Wave heights exceeding two meters are expected in the southern part, resulting in rough seas.
  • The Arabian Gulf: It is experiencing southeasterly to southerly winds that turn northeasterly, with waves reaching more than two meters in the event of thunderstorms and rain.

The importance of early warning and the climate context

These warnings are part of the National Center for Meteorology's ongoing efforts to enhance preparedness among relevant authorities and citizens. These reports are of paramount importance in the Kingdom due to the geographical nature of some areas, which include valleys and ravines that could pose a danger during heavy rainfall. Such weather fluctuations are typical of the current season, as the Kingdom usually experiences periods of atmospheric instability resulting from the interaction of air masses, necessitating close monitoring of current weather forecasts.

Public safety recommendations and weather impact

Due to the expected weather conditions, the relevant authorities, including the Civil Defense, urge citizens and residents to exercise caution. It is advised to avoid low-lying areas and floodplains, and not to attempt to cross wadis while they are flowing, regardless of how low the water level may seem. Drivers are also urged to drive with extreme caution on highways in areas experiencing dense fog or dust storms, maintain a safe following distance to avoid traffic accidents, and stay updated on weather conditions through official channels.
