Saudi Founding Day: Commemorating three centuries of glory and pride

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia celebrates its National Day on February 22nd each year, a cherished national occasion that embodies the depth of Saudi history spanning more than three centuries. This celebration reaffirms the firm foundations of the Saudi state and commemorates its glorious history, which began in 1139 AH (1727 CE), linking the prosperous present to its rich past and reflecting the enduring bond between the leadership and the people throughout the ages.
Historical depth: starting from Diriyah
The origins of this occasion date back to mid-1139 AH (February 1727 CE), when Imam Muhammad bin Saud assumed power in Diriyah, declaring the establishment of the First Saudi State. This moment was not merely a passing event, but a pivotal turning point in the history of the Arabian Peninsula, laying the foundations for unity, security, and stability after centuries of fragmentation and disunity. During this period, the state successfully secured pilgrimage and trade routes and disseminated knowledge and culture, transforming Diriyah into a beacon of learning and culture.
The importance of the royal decree and its distinction from National Day
The Royal Decree issued by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, in January 2022, designated February 22nd as an official holiday to commemorate the Founding Day, thus reviving this historical memory. It is important to distinguish between “Founding Day” and “National Day.” The former symbolizes the establishment of the state and its deep historical roots (1727 CE), while the latter celebrates the unification of the Kingdom and the change of its name to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia by King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Saud in 1932 CE. This convergence of the two occasions strengthens national identity and highlights the continuity of the state.
The manifestations of celebration and its cultural impact
Cities across the Kingdom are witnessing diverse cultural and artistic events that reflect authentic Saudi heritage. Citizens and residents alike wear traditional attire representing different regions of the Kingdom, such as the "daghla," "saya," and "mahzam" for men, and embroidered traditional clothing for women. Artistic performances depicting life in old markets, traditional schools, and the Saudi Ardah dance are also being held, contributing to introducing new generations to their cultural heritage and enhancing the presence of Saudi heritage on the international stage as part of the Kingdom's soft power.
Future vision: From establishment to 2030
Celebrating the Kingdom's founding day is not merely about remembering the past; it is a message for the future, aligned with the goals of Vision 2030, spearheaded by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Pride in national identity and cultural heritage is a cornerstone in building a vibrant society and a thriving economy. Drawing inspiration from the determination and perseverance of the imams and kings of the Saudi state throughout history serves as a powerful impetus to continue the journey of building and development, ensuring the Kingdom remains a proud and leading force both regionally and globally.
