1.6 million inspection tours: Regional municipalities' efforts for better Saudi cities

The Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs and Housing, represented by the regional secretariats, announced that it carried out more than 1.6 million intensive inspection tours during the first quarter of 2024. These efforts come within the framework of the Ministry’s continuous endeavor to enhance compliance with regulations and bylaws, raise the level of quality of municipal services, improve the urban landscape, and ensure the protection of public health in various cities and governorates of the Kingdom.

Increased monitoring efforts and diverse approaches

The ministry explained that inspection tours witnessed an increasing pace during the first three months of the year, with over 526,000 tours conducted in January, followed by more than 562,000 in February, reaching a peak in March with 596,000 inspection tours. These field and regulatory campaigns encompassed multiple tracks to ensure comprehensive coverage, including monitoring public health, markets, addressing visual pollution, monitoring buildings and collective housing, as well as monitoring excavations and land encroachments, regulating commercial activities, and classifying contractors. This diversity reflects the comprehensive and integrated nature of the regulatory roles in supporting quality of life and enhancing the efficiency of cities.

General context: An integral part of Saudi Vision 2030

These figures cannot be viewed in isolation from the broader national context. These intensive monitoring campaigns fall within the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, specifically the Quality of Life Program, which aims to make Saudi cities among the best in the world to live in. Improving the urban landscape, ensuring food safety, and providing a safe and organized environment are all fundamental pillars for achieving this ambitious vision. Through these inspections, the Ministry is working to implement global standards in urban management, contributing to the development of sustainable cities that are attractive to residents, visitors, and investors alike.

Importance and Expected Impact: From Local to Global

Locally, these efforts translate into a direct improvement in residents' daily lives by ensuring product safety in markets, maintaining the cleanliness of public facilities, and reducing violations that detract from the overall appearance of cities. Regionally and internationally, these measures enhance the Kingdom's reputation as a progressive destination that prioritizes quality of life and sustainable urban development. As the Kingdom prepares to host major global events, these regulatory efforts become even more crucial in presenting a positive image of its modern and well-organized cities.

A modern methodology for effective monitoring

The ministry affirmed that these efforts are based on a modern oversight methodology centered on “smart monitoring,” which utilizes data and operational indicators to enhance effectiveness. It also adopts the principle of “enhancing compliance before imposing penalties” by raising awareness and guiding business owners, thus contributing to the swift resolution of issues and improving the customer experience. In conclusion, the ministry emphasized its continued commitment to intensifying oversight visits and leveraging modern technologies and qualified field personnel to build safe, organized, and sustainable urban environments.
