Saudi Passports Department alerts for travelers: Validity and ID requirements
The General Directorate of Passports in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has issued a set of important warnings and instructions to citizens wishing to travel abroad, as part of its ongoing commitment to facilitating travel procedures and ensuring that travelers are not exposed to any obstacles that may prevent them from completing their trips or expose them to legal accountability at international ports of entry.
Passport validity requirements and preservation measures
The Saudi General Directorate of Passports emphasized the importance of ensuring passport validity before planning travel, outlining internationally and regionally recognized validity periods. The Directorate confirmed that passports must have at least three months of validity remaining for travel to Arab countries, while a minimum of six months is required for travel to the rest of the world. This measure aligns with international protocols implemented by most countries to ensure travelers can return or extend their stay in emergency situations without violating immigration regulations.
In a related context, the Directorate called on citizens to safeguard their passports, whether inside or outside the Kingdom, warning against neglecting them or pawning them to any party, as the passport is considered an official document owned by the state that must be protected from damage, loss, or misuse, and kept in safe places throughout the travel period.
Digital identity and technological transformation
In light of the significant technological advancements the Kingdom is witnessing through its e-government platforms, the General Directorate of Passports clarified a crucial point that some may overlook: the digital national ID available through the "Absher" and "Tawakkalna" applications, as well as the family record, are local identification documents and do not authorize their holders to travel outside the Kingdom. This clarification aims to prevent any confusion among citizens, as international ports of entry still accept physical documents (passports or plastic national ID cards for Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, according to applicable agreements) as official travel documents.
Procedures for activating the renewed passport
The General Directorate of Passports concluded its alerts by clarifying the procedure for handling electronically renewed passports, noting that all citizens are required to activate their passports after completing the renewal process through the “Absher” platform. Activation can be done by visiting passport offices or their branches located throughout the country, or through designated offices at international ports of entry. The Directorate emphasized that this step does not require a prior appointment, in order to facilitate the process for beneficiaries and ensure the swift completion of procedures before departure.
