A Saudi Red Crescent achievement: Saving a pilgrim at the Prophet's Mosque
An exceptional medical achievement within the precincts of the Prophet's Mosque
The Saudi Red Crescent Authority's ambulance teams in the Madinah region achieved a new medical and humanitarian milestone by successfully saving the life of a 78-year-old Pakistani visitor. The patient suffered a sudden cardiac and respiratory arrest in the western courtyards of the Prophet's Mosque immediately after the Maghrib prayer, amidst the massive crowds typical of the holy month of Ramadan.
Standard response speed reflects maximum readiness
In detailing the incident, Dr. Ahmed bin Ali Al-Zahrani, Director General of the Authority's branch in the region, explained that the medical evacuation center received the emergency report on Friday, the 24th of Ramadan, at 7:02 PM. Thanks to their high level of preparedness, the specialized ambulance teams arrived at the scene in a record-breaking response time of just 1 minute and 45 seconds (105 seconds) from the time the call was received. This exceptional figure reflects the high level of professionalism and strategic deployment of medical teams in the central area to serve the pilgrims.
Applying the latest global medical protocols
The medical teams immediately began managing the critical case on-site, following the latest internationally approved medical protocols. This included intensive cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of advanced medical equipment. To ensure maximum efficiency, an additional support team was requested to handle the complexities of the case, which, thanks be to God, resulted in restoring the patient's pulse at the scene. After his initial condition stabilized, the patient was quickly transported by ambulance to the referral hospital for further examinations and specialized care.
General context: The Kingdom's historic efforts in serving the pilgrims
Historically, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has placed great importance and care on the health and safety of pilgrims to the Two Holy Mosques. Providing free and advanced healthcare to pilgrims has been a cornerstone of Saudi government policy for decades. With the launch of Saudi Vision 2030, these efforts have been amplified through the “Serving the Guests of God” program, which aims to enrich the religious experience and provide a healthy and safe environment for pilgrims and visitors, ensuring they can perform their rituals with peace of mind and ease.
Integrated operational plans during Ramadan
The success of this emergency response operation is not a coincidence, but rather the result of meticulously planned and comprehensive operations implemented by the Saudi Red Crescent Authority. These plans rely on the deployment of hundreds of highly trained ambulance teams and volunteer personnel around the clock in and around the Prophet's Mosque. The plan includes the use of golf carts and foot patrols to ensure rapid response through dense crowds and reach those in need as quickly as possible, especially during peak hours.
The local and international impact of the success of the health system
This event has a broad positive impact both regionally and internationally; it sends a reassuring message to millions of Muslims worldwide that their fellow pilgrims are receiving top-tier healthcare. It also reinforces the reputation of the Saudi healthcare system as one of the most efficient in managing crowds and handling medical emergencies in gatherings of millions, reflecting the Kingdom's bright humanitarian image.
