The Saudi Shura Council discusses strengthening cooperation with the parliament of Tajikistan
In a move that underscores the depth of bilateral relations and the two countries' commitment to developing them, His Excellency the Speaker of the Shura Council, Sheikh Dr. Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Ibrahim Al Sheikh, received His Excellency the Ambassador of the Republic of Tajikistan to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Mr. Akram Karimi, at his office in the Council's headquarters in Riyadh. The meeting provided an important opportunity to discuss ways to strengthen and develop joint cooperation, particularly at the parliamentary level, between the Saudi Shura Council and the Tajik Parliament.
Historical background and deep-rooted relationships
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Tajikistan enjoy strong diplomatic relations dating back to Tajikistan's independence in the early 1990s. The Kingdom was among the first countries to recognize Tajikistan's independence and establish diplomatic ties, based on shared fraternal, religious, and cultural bonds. Over the decades, these relations have witnessed remarkable development across various political and economic fields, with high-level reciprocal visits demonstrating a shared commitment to expanding these relations further.
The importance and impact of parliamentary diplomacy
This meeting reinforces the role of parliamentary diplomacy as a cornerstone of both countries' foreign policy. Dialogue between legislative bodies, such as the Majlis-e-Majlis and the Parliament of Tajikistan, opens direct channels of communication that contribute to the exchange of legislative expertise, the coordination of positions in regional and international parliamentary forums, and the activation of joint parliamentary friendship committees. This cooperation extends beyond the political sphere to include building bridges of popular and cultural understanding, thus serving shared interests in the long term.
Expected impact at the regional and international levels
Regionally, strengthening relations between Saudi Arabia and Tajikistan is of strategic importance. The Kingdom, with its political and economic weight in the Middle East and the Islamic world, seeks to enhance its partnerships with Central Asian countries, which represent a significant strategic depth. This cooperation will contribute to supporting development and stability efforts in the region and addressing shared challenges. Internationally, coordinating positions between the two countries in international organizations, such as the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the United Nations, strengthens the voice of moderation, advocating for peace, dialogue, and the peaceful resolution of conflicts. During the meeting, the two sides discussed a number of issues of mutual interest, emphasizing the importance of continued consultation and coordination to achieve the aspirations of the leadership and people of both friendly nations.
