SDAIA supports the Makkah Route Initiative with artificial intelligence technologies to serve pilgrims
SDAIA's role as a "digital enabler" in serving the pilgrims
In a move reflecting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s commitment to harnessing the latest technologies to serve pilgrims, the Saudi Data & Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) has developed and is operating a comprehensive suite of highly secure technological systems to facilitate the Hajj journey. This effort is part of its active participation in the “Makkah Route” initiative, where its specialized technical teams worked at the initiative’s terminal in Blaise Diagne International Airport in Senegal to streamline and expedite pilgrims’ travel procedures, underscoring its role as a key digital enabler of this pioneering national initiative.
Background and strategic objectives of the “Makkah Route” initiative
The Makkah Route Initiative is a key component of the Guests of God Service Program, one of the programs under Saudi Vision 2030. Launched to revolutionize the Hajj experience, the initiative streamlines entry procedures for pilgrims arriving in the Kingdom at their home airports. These procedures include issuing e-visas, collecting biometric data (fingerprints), verifying health requirements, and tagging and sorting luggage according to transportation and accommodation arrangements within the Kingdom. Upon arrival, pilgrims are transferred directly to dedicated buses to transport them to their accommodations in Makkah and Madinah, while their luggage is delivered to them by the relevant authorities.
Details of the technical solutions provided by SDAIA
The technical team at SDAIA developed systems fully compliant with the initiative's requirements, focusing on the highest standards of privacy and data security. These efforts included operating and supporting the technical systems, equipping integrated workstations with the latest technologies, and providing mobile units with biometric data recording devices, thus offering greater flexibility in managing pilgrim groups. To ensure uninterrupted operations, comprehensive backup systems were also implemented. SDAIA's team, comprised of highly skilled engineers and technicians, works around the clock to ensure the efficient connection, activation, and operation of all systems, contributing to the completion of pilgrim procedures in record time.
The importance and expected impact of these efforts
The significance of these technological efforts lies in their direct impact on enhancing the experience of millions of pilgrims arriving from around the world. Domestically, this initiative highlights the Kingdom's ability to manage massive crowds efficiently and effectively, reinforcing its position as a leader in digital transformation. Internationally, the success of the "Makkah Route" initiative, implemented this year in eight countries, provides a global model for how technology can be used to facilitate travel and cross-border transit for major events. The close collaboration between SDAIA, the Ministry of Interior, and other participating ministries and agencies represents integrated government action aimed at ultimately ensuring the utmost comfort and peace of mind for pilgrims, facilitating their performance of the Hajj rituals with ease and tranquility.
