Starbucks launches first sign language cafe in Saudi Arabia in partnership with the For Them Association
In a pioneering move reflecting a deep commitment to social responsibility and inclusivity, Starbucks, in strategic partnership with the “For Them” Association for People with Disabilities, announced the opening of the first fully sign language-operated café in Saudi Arabia. This event represents a significant step forward for the Kingdom’s food and beverage sector, aiming to effectively and directly integrate the deaf, mute, and hard-of-hearing community into the workforce.
A unique experience that transcends the concept of coffee
This new branch offers more than just coffee and beverages; it provides a comprehensive human and cultural experience. Designed to be accessible to the deaf community, the café features staff (partners) wearing special aprons with sign language symbols, and offers menus and digital technologies that facilitate communication between staff and customers from diverse backgrounds. This initiative aims to break down communication barriers and create an interactive space where customers can learn some basic sign language while ordering their daily coffee.
Global context and international initiative
It is worth noting that this is not Starbucks' first such move globally, but rather part of its "Signing Stores" initiative launched worldwide. This initiative began with the opening of the first branch in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2016, followed by branches in Washington, D.C., in the United States, as well as in China and Japan. The opening of the Saudi branch further solidifies the Kingdom's position as a pioneer in adopting global initiatives that enhance quality of life and support diversity in workplaces.
Alignment with the Kingdom's Vision 2030
This event takes on particular significance from a local perspective, as it aligns perfectly with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030. The Vision places the empowerment of people with disabilities at the heart of its priorities, striving to transform them from groups in need of care into productive and active contributors to the national economy. Starbucks' partnership with the "For Them" Association serves as a model for collaboration between the private and non-profit sectors to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and provide decent and suitable employment opportunities for all.
Expected social and economic impact
This café is expected to have a wide-ranging positive impact, not only by creating jobs but also by changing societal stereotypes about the abilities of deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. This model demonstrates that the only obstacle is an unsuitable environment, and that with the right tools, this group can provide high-quality services and excel in their performance. This opening also encourages other international and local companies to take similar steps, further promoting a culture of inclusivity in the Saudi business sector.
