Transportation: Facial recognition is mandatory and passenger apps will be 100% localized

In a decisive regulatory move aimed at restructuring the ride-sharing sector, the Public Transport Authority in Saudi Arabia announced on Sunday the official adoption of facial recognition technology for identity verification for all drivers working with ride-hailing apps . This step coincides with the launch of a unified electronic platform dedicated to registering and documenting the data of all workers in this vital sector.

New verification mechanism and implementation date

The authority clarified that the new system will be fully and mandatorily implemented during the first quarter of 2026. This mechanism relies on artificial intelligence and biometric verification technologies to ensure a complete and continuous match between the driver's identity officially registered in the application and the actual driver during the trip. This new portal aims to be the primary regulatory reference for verifying drivers' eligibility and the validity of their vehicle records before allowing them to accept any requests from users.

Localization of the sector and prohibition of foreign employment

In a related context, the Public Transport Authority reiterated its firm stance that passenger transport via smart applications is exclusively reserved for Saudi citizens. It indicated that the new technological procedures, including facial recognition, will serve as a strict control tool to prevent any resident or expatriate from working illegally in this sector. This will completely eliminate the phenomenon of account rentals or the use of others' accounts, thus enhancing job opportunities for citizens and protecting their gains in this growing market.

Dimensions of the decision and combating commercial concealment

This decision is not merely regulatory; it also carries significant security and economic dimensions. Economically, this step is a preemptive strike against the phenomenon of commercial concealment in the transportation sector, where some violators resort to operating under false or assumed names. From a security perspective, biometric verification ensures the highest levels of safety and reliability for passengers, allowing them to confirm that the driver is the authorized and licensed individual. This enhances the quality of service provided and strengthens confidence in the Kingdom's digital transportation system.

The role of beneficiaries in oversight

The authority concluded its statement by urging all users of ride-hailing apps to actively participate in implementing the system by promptly reporting any discrepancies they observe between the driver's identity displayed on the app and the actual driver. The authority has designated the unified number 19929 for receiving reports and feedback, emphasizing that passenger awareness is a key partner in the success of this regulatory process and in ensuring a safe and violation-free transportation environment.
