Al-Lith Environment Authority confiscates 80 kg of illegally caught fish to protect marine resources

Confiscation of illegally caught fish in Al-Lith

As part of its ongoing efforts to enhance environmental monitoring and protect marine resources, the inspection teams of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture's office in Al-Lith Governorate announced the confiscation of approximately 80 kilograms of grouper and snapper. This action was taken due to violations of approved fishing regulations. The fish were seized during routine field inspections targeting fishermen's harbors and fish markets in the governorate, as part of the Ministry's efforts to ensure compliance with regulations governing the sector.

General context: Protecting marine resources in the Red Sea

Al-Lith Governorate, located on the Red Sea coast, is a vital region heavily reliant on fishing as a primary economic and food source. The Red Sea is renowned for its unique biodiversity, making it a natural treasure requiring careful protection and regulation. These monitoring campaigns are part of a broader national strategy aimed at combating illegal and unregulated fishing, which threatens the sustainability of fish stocks and disrupts the delicate ecological balance of marine ecosystems. Imposing fishing bans on certain species, such as grouper and sea bream, particularly during their breeding seasons, is a scientifically sound measure necessary to ensure the replenishment of fish stocks for future generations and protect them from depletion.

The importance of monitoring campaigns and their expected impact

The importance of these measures extends beyond the environmental aspect to encompass economic and social dimensions. Locally, these campaigns ensure equal opportunities for fishermen who adhere to regulations and laws, protecting their livelihoods from illegal practices that rapidly deplete resources. They also contribute to providing safe and healthy seafood products for consumers. Regionally, Saudi Arabia's efforts to preserve the Red Sea environment benefit all littoral states, as marine ecosystems transcend political boundaries. These efforts align with the Kingdom's international commitments related to the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 14 concerning "Life Below Water.".

In line with the Kingdom's Vision 2030

The Director of the Ministry's office in Al-Lith, Engineer Yahya bin Abdulrahman Al-Mahabi, confirmed that all necessary legal measures have been taken against violators in accordance with applicable regulations. He emphasized that these monitoring and awareness campaigns will continue to ensure the application of best practices in fishing and marketing operations. These efforts reflect the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture's commitment to achieving the goals of Vision 2030, which places great importance on environmental protection and the sustainable development of natural resources, thereby supporting food security and strengthening the non-oil national economy.
