Trump and Iran: Details of a potential agreement to end tensions in the region

Trump makes surprise announcement regarding Iran

In a significant development, former US President Donald Trump announced his readiness to make what he called a “final decision” regarding a potential deal with Iran. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump outlined conditions he said would lead to the lifting of the “unprecedented and incredible naval blockade” on Iran, urging ships stranded in the Strait of Hormuz to begin the process of “returning home.”.

In his tweet, Trump demanded that Iran immediately open the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic without restrictions or transit fees, and work to remove any sea mines that may be present in the area, noting that advanced American minesweepers would contribute to this process.

Background to the tension between Washington and Tehran

This announcement comes against the backdrop of a historically strained relationship between the United States and Iran, which reached its peak during Trump's presidency. In 2018, Trump withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal (the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action – JCPOA), signed in 2015 between Iran and world powers. Following the withdrawal, his administration reimposed crippling economic sanctions on Tehran as part of a policy known as "maximum pressure," aimed at forcing Iran to renegotiate a new agreement on stricter terms.

This policy has led to a significant escalation of tensions in the Gulf region, including incidents targeting oil tankers and the downing of an American drone, culminating in the assassination of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad in early 2020, which put the region on the brink of a large-scale war.

Strict nuclear conditions and frozen funds

Regarding the nuclear issue, Trump stressed the necessity of Iran's unequivocal agreement not to possess any nuclear weapons. He indicated that the enriched material, which he referred to as "nuclear dust," would be extracted and destroyed in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Iranian side. Concerning Iranian funds frozen abroad, Trump affirmed that no money would be released until all other terms of the proposed deal were agreed upon, deeming them less important. He concluded his post by stating that he would be heading to the "situation room" to make the final decision regarding these developments.

The strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz

Trump's call to reopen the Strait of Hormuz is particularly significant given the strait's strategic location. It is the world's most important waterway for oil transport, with nearly a fifth of global oil consumption passing through it. Any disruption to navigation in this strait could lead to severe instability in global energy markets and a significant increase in oil prices, impacting the entire global economy. The strait has long been a major flashpoint, with Iran threatening on several occasions to close it in response to international pressure and sanctions.
