Saudi Arabia condemns Iran's attempts to target Turkey and Azerbaijan

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia expressed its strong condemnation of Iranian attempts to target the security and safety of both the Republic of Turkey and the Republic of Azerbaijan. This firm Saudi stance underscores the Kingdom's pivotal role in maintaining regional stability and its categorical rejection of any practices that could destabilize regional security.

A firm rejection of hostile behavior

In its statement, the Kingdom stressed that these attempts, which it described as "cowardly," constitute a blatant violation of state sovereignty and an unjustified infringement on its security. The Ministry indicated that Iran's repeated hostile actions toward countries in the region reveal a political approach that is inconsistent with the principles of good neighborliness and cannot be justified under any pretext. Riyadh affirmed that these actions are in clear contravention of international laws and norms, and the UN Charter, which stipulates respect for the sovereignty of states and non-interference in their internal affairs.

Context of regional tensions

This Saudi announcement comes at a time of sensitive geopolitical shifts in the Caucasus and the Middle East. The relationship between Turkey and Azerbaijan is characterized by a strong strategic partnership, described by the slogan "One nation, two states," meaning that any threat to one is considered a threat to the other. In contrast, relations between Iran and Azerbaijan have witnessed intermittent tensions in recent years, linked to political differences and border military maneuvers. The Saudi position reflects a keen understanding of the situation, as Riyadh recognizes that any escalation in the region could have negative repercussions for international peace and security, as well as impact energy routes and the global economy.

Full Saudi solidarity

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia expressed its full and unwavering solidarity with Turkey and Azerbaijan, both governments and peoples, in the face of these threats. Riyadh affirmed the legitimate right of both countries to take all necessary measures to protect their security and airspace, and to ensure the safety of their territories and citizens. The Kingdom commended the efforts exerted by Ankara and Baku to exercise restraint and avoid being drawn into a military escalation that could harm the interests of the region's peoples.

A call to adhere to international conventions

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs concluded its statement by warning against the consequences of continuing this escalatory approach, calling on the international community to fulfill its responsibilities by compelling all parties to respect the national sovereignty of states. This statement reaffirms the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's commitment to its diplomatic approach, which advocates dialogue and rejects violence, while maintaining a firm stance against any threats to its allies and partners in the region.
